Eight transfers you might have missed as the 2025 summer transfer window opens again

Teams are still going strong in the market trying to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The 2025 summer transfer window is unlike any other we’ve seen before. Fifa granted two different periods in which clubs could sign and sell players due to the revamped Club World Cup having started on 14th June. The first one was before the tournament (1st June – 10th June) and the second has been underway since 16th June and lasts until 1st September.

Considering how fans around the world have embraced the new format of the competition, a few transfers since its start may have flown under the radar. Here are a few examples.

Florian Wirtz

  • From: Bayer Leverkusen
  • To: Liverpool

This one doesn’t really fit the bill, but it’s still worth the shout. Former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has completed his move to Liverpool for a reported £116 million and already has fans biting their nails wondering what he’ll be able to deliver as a Red.

He follows Jeremie Frimpong’s footsteps making the switch from Germany to Merseyside. The pair won a Bundesliga title in 2023-24 and will be hoping to repeat domestic success in England next season.

Mathys Tel

  • From: Bayern Munich
  • To: Tottenham Hotspur

Mathys Tel has been playing for Tottenham since the start of the year, when he joined the Europa League winners in an initial loan deal.

Last week, Spurs announced they had exercised their option to buy Tel from Bayern and keep him for good. The Frenchman has been representing his country in the U21 European Championship this month and already has two goals in four games.

Adrien Truffert

  • From: Rennes
  • To: Bournemouth

Bournemouth were one the firsts victims of the smaller and early transfer window as they saw Dean Huijsen depart to Real Madrid. They are also bracing themselves for other sales, with players such as Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi, Alex Scott and Antoine Semenyo set to attract interest from elsewhere.

Anticipating all of this, the Cherries have already started to make moves themselves, signing left-back Adrien Truffert from French side Rennes.

Fer Lopez

  • From: Celta Vigo
  • To: Wolves

Like Bournemouth, Wolves will enter the 2025-26 season with a very different squad than the one that ended the 2024-25 campaign. The difference is that they’ve already seen two starters (and maybe their best players) leave – both headed to Manchester: Matheus Cunha, who signed for Manchester United, and Rayan Aït-Nouri, who made his Manchester City debut in the Club World Cup.

Wolves have completed the signing of Fer Lopez from Spanish side Celta Vigo. The 21-year-old put together nice appearances off the bench in and ended the season on a high, starting four of the club’s last six La Liga matches.

Lukas Nmecha

  • From: Wolfsburg
  • To: Leeds United

Man City academy graduate Lukas Nmecha has found his way back to English football after five years away. Wolfsburg actually signed the striker on loan in the summer of 2019 but cut his spell short just four months later, allowing him to join Middlesbrough for the rest of the season. He then played for Anderlecht for a year before going back to Wolfsburg – this time on a permanent basis.

He now leaves as a free agent and will be a Leeds United player from 1st July. In the last Bundesliga season, he played in just 19 games with only three as a starter, bagging three goals in the process.

Edin Dzeko

  • From: Fenerbahce
  • To: Fiorentina

Edin Dzeko is back in Italy after two years away. The Bosnian striker made his first move to Italy in 2015, initially on loan at AS Roma before making the move permanent. He spent five years in Rome before moving over to Inter Milan.

Two years later, Dzeko left the league to join Fenerbahce. There he scored 46 goals in 99 games, but his two-year stay has come to an end. Fiorentina are the destination for Dzeko, who will turn 40 next year.

Joan Garcia

  • From: Espanyol
  • To: Barcelona

Barcelona had some troubles with their goalkeepers last season, having to entice Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement to fill a gap. They’ve wasted little time in adding to their permanent goalkeeping options, signing Joan Garcia from rivals Espanyol.

Garcia kept eight clean sheets in La Liga last season, conceding 51 goals. He also made 145 saves, more than any other goalkeeper in Spain’s top flight.

Diego Coppola

  • From: Verona
  • To: Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion are always one of the busiest Premier League clubs in the transfer windows — both for buying and selling. This week, they’ve bought, signing Diego Coppola from Italian side Verona.

The 21-year-old played 34 times for Verona last season, and averaged 5.97 clearances completed per 90 minutes in Serie A. He also ranked 12th in Serie A for headed clearances, at 3.23 per 90. Overall, Coppola ranked second for aerial duels won, with only Milan Djuric winning more than his 133.
