Yan Diomande analysis: Can Ivory Coast’s rising star crack Ecuador’s World Cup defence?

Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande

Ecuador boasted the best defensive record in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. Ivory Coast will put that to the test.

The South American giants finished behind only reigning world champions Argentina as they collected 29 points. They still pipped the likes of Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil into second, despite being docked three points for the use of false birth certificates for Bryan Castillo.

And a key reason was their rock-solid defensive record. Indeed, Sebastian Beccacece’s side shipped just five goals across 18 matches to book their 2026 World Cup spot. Household names Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho form part of the defensive bedrock. They’re shielded by Moises Caicedo.

Group E the most intriguing at the World Cup

Unsurprisingly, they proved incredibly difficult to break down. The trio are among the best in the world in their respective positions. However, that defensive resolve will be put to the test when they take on Ivory Coast in the early hours of Monday morning. It’s a match-up between two contrasting styles spanning two continents.

Group E is one of the more intriguing in North America. Germany and Curacao join Ecuador and Ivory Coast in the group. Tournament debutants Curacao have a tough task on their hands to avoid falling at the first hurdle.

And while the Blue Wave are expected to struggle against Germany, the meeting between La Tri and the Elephants is a tough one to call. Given Ecuador’s strength in defence, it could be that a moment of magic determines the victor.

Diomande to provide Ivory Coast’s spark?

Fortunately for Ivory Coast, they are able to call upon one player who can peg backlines back. Yan Diomande enjoyed a stunning 12 months following his summer switch from Leganes to RB Leipzig.

The teenage winger hardly pulled up any trees in Spain. His move to Germany flew under the radar. A year on, and Diomande is one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe. RB Leipzig feel confident they can command a fee of £100m for the teenager when the time comes to sell. And if he transfers his flying club form to country, then suitors will be queuing up to pay that nine-figure sum.

Few could have foreseen Diomande establishing himself as one of the best wingers in Europe. Yet he did just that, with Liverpool among those courting the 19-year-old. The Reds view the teen as a Mohamed Salah replacement.

12 goals and eight assists in his debut Bundesliga campaign goes some way to show why Diomande is now hot property. The latter haul came from 56 chances created, the eighth most in the division. However, it is Diomande’s ability to run at a marker that has seen the winger rise to superstardom.

Soon-to-be-former-boss Ole Werner’s use of a 4-3-3 benefitted the wingers at his disposal. Both Diomande and Antonio Nusa are thorns in the side of any opposition defence. They ranked first (118) and second (68), respectively, for completed take ons in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season. And there is the possibility that Ivory Coast will implement a similar gameplan at the World Cup.

Ecuador to struggle against Elephants’ wide options

Head coach Emerse Fae has a host of effective wide players to call upon. Amad Diallo, Simon Adingra and Nicolas Pepe have all jetted stateside this summer, meaning Fae can implement an approach with the wide players to drive the team forward down the flanks.

Fae utilised a 4-3-3 setup for the Africa Cup of Nations. It may not have delivered AFCON success in Morocco, but Fae favoured Amad and Diomande down the flanks. In all likelihood, he’ll do so again in North America this month and, hopefully, into next.

While perhaps not as strong as fellow African nations Senegal or Morocco, Ivory Coast still have the personnel to hurt any team at the World Cup. Ivorians will be hoping they have what it takes to break down this steadfast Ecuador outfit.

With Diomande coming into the tournament on the back of a stand out domestic campaign, it’s possible that Ecuador will face their toughest test in months. The RB Leipzig man has enjoyed a breakout campaign for his club side. Now is the time for Diomande to really showcase his talent to the watching world.
