Who are the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League right now?

A couple years ago Cesc Fabregas famously claimed the No.10 role is dying out in modern football. For many with fond memories of players like Dennis Bergkamp, this is a tragedy. Equally, though, some would counter that the role has simply changed and that there are still many examples in the Premier League today.

So who are the best around? You’re about to find out…

More Premier League player rankings:

We have three midfield scores to rank the different profiles within the league (No.6 Score, No.8 Score and No.10). But here we’re focusing on No.10s and attacking midfielders who operate in, broadly speaking, central areas.

Only players who have played half the minutes available during the 2024/25 season have been considered (400+minutes).

5. Marcus Tavernier

  • Team: Bournemouth
  • Squawka Score: 68%

Very few would have predicted that Marcus Tavernier would be among the league’s best wingers before the tenth matchday of the Premier League, but here we are. Tavernier has earned his spot, even though Bournemouth isn’t flying high. He has registered two goals and assisted another, making the second-most penalty area entries (63), and joint-most tackles won (9) of any number 10 in the Premier League.

4. Eberechi Eze

  • Team: Crystal Palace
  • Squawka Score: 70%

Eberechi Eze was directly involved in 15 Premier League goals last season, with 13 of those occurring when he played centrally. There were rumours that he would leave Crystal Palace this summer, with clubs like Tottenham and Manchester City expressing interest. If he had joined Michael Olise in departing, it would have been a significant loss for Oliver Glasner. However, the England international stayed with the team, and despite a challenging start to the season, he remains a key player in Crystal Palace’s quest for success.

3. Matheus Cunha

  • Team: Wolves
  • Squawka Score: 71%

Wolves have had a challenging start to the season, remaining winless after their opening nine matches. However, Matheus Cunha’s contributions cannot be questioned. Although he has been deployed across the front line, Gary O’Neil has predominantly used him in the number 10 role. In this position, the Brazilian has been a nuisance for opposition defenders, committing nine fouls in the final third, which is the highest among number 10s in England’s top division. Furthermore, he has scored four goals, placing him just behind Cole Palmer, who has seven.

2. Dwight McNeil

  • Team: Everton
  • Squawka Score: 71%

Despite Everton’s turbulent start to the season, Dwight McNeil has shown impressive underlying numbers, even when the team was struggling to secure wins under Sean Dyche. Recently, he has started to receive the recognition he deserves. So far, McNeil has created seven big chances, with only Cole Palmer (nine) ranking higher among players positioned behind the striker. He has contributed to six goals (three goals and three assists), again trailing only Palmer (11). Additionally, McNeil has made 75 penalty area entries, the highest of any Premier League player in his position.

1. Cole Palmer

  • Team: Chelsea
  • Squawka Score: 79%

Palmer, the undisputed Premier League young player of the 2023/24 season, was also in contention for the bigger prize, which eluded him. If he continues on this trajectory, it will not be long before he claims it. The former Manchester City academy graduate could not have enjoyed a better debut season for Chelsea, where he netted 22 goals and created a further 11 for his teammates—the most goal involvements of any player in the Premier League in 2024/25.

He was directly involved in more Premier League goals in the 2023/24 season than any other Chelsea player managed in their debut season, breaking Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s record. Furthermore, Palmer has been directly involved in 33 Premier League goals for Chelsea in 2024 (21 goals, 12 assists). Only two players have had more goals and assists in a year for the Blues – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 2001 (25 goals, 11 assists) and Didier Drogba in 2010 (22 goals, 13 assists).

How do Squawka’s ratings work?

Squawka’s new player rating system is completely stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.

Using extensive research and our expertise, we tailored each score to the players’ respective positions. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes and so on.
