After an action-packed World Cup, the 2026/27 Premier League season is just around the corner.
One of the defining factors of this summer’s festival of football in North America is just how much the top players showed up. Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot, but he was pushed all the way by some huge names, including Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.
Now, the latter will be focusing on getting his hands on the Premier League Golden Boot for the fourth time in five years, which would see him equal the record number of award wins set by Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah.
Of course, competition for the 2026/27 award is going to be fierce, so here, we’ve taken a look at the favourite, as well as a standout dark horse and outsider based on the latest odds.

The favourite: Erling Haaland

Haaland is the defending champion when it comes to the Golden Boot, netting 27 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, at least five more than any other player.
The Norwegian sensation — one of the highlights of the World Cup — has had an almost iron grip on the Golden Boot in recent years. However, last season was arguably his most impressive triumph yet, given it’s the first time he’s scooped the award without Manchester City lifting the Premier League title.
It’s the start of a new era at the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola departing to be replaced by Enzo Maresca. Bernardo Silva and John Stones are also among those to have left the club.
However, the likes of Elliot Anderson and Mathys Detourbet have been signed at great expense so far, augmenting a squad that still contains Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and many others. There will be no shortage of service.
The numbers speak for themselves: Haaland was the only player in the Premier League last season to attempt more than 100 shots (126), while Semenyo (49.4%) was the only player with more than 25% minutes and more than 30 shots attempted with a better shooting accuracy than his 46.83%.
It’s hard to know what to expect from Man City this season, but you can be sure that Haaland will be among the goals and right at the front of the queue for the Golden Boot. He’s the man to beat.

The dark horse: Joao Pedro

There wasn’t much to get excited about at Stamford Bridge last season, but Joao Pedro can walk away with plenty of credit in the bank.
Carrying the pressure of a price tag in excess of £55m, Pedro enjoyed a very positive debut campaign with Chelsea, netting 23 goals across all competitions. That includes 15 in the Premier League, despite the Blues slipping to 10th in the table and losing 14 times.
Only four players across the entire league outscored Pedro, and they all played for teams that finished above Chelsea in the table, including City duo Haaland and Semenyo.
What’s more, Pedro had to work with a fraction of the service Haaland had, taking 31 fewer shots, getting 25 fewer big chances and having 68 fewer touches in the opposition box.
The fact that Pedro wasn’t called up to the Brazil squad for the World Cup is criminal, especially when you consider in hindsight that their only knockout goal was a last-minute Neymar penalty. That should light a fire inside Pedro, however, with the 24-year-old out to prove a point.
Chelsea have already strengthened significantly this summer with the additions of Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra, adding to a squad that already contains Cole Palmer, Estevao and others. If everything clicks, the attacking possibilities are terrifying for Xabi Alonso’s side, and that can only enhance Pedro’s chances.

The outsider: Benjamin Sesko

Benjamin Sesko had a bizarre first season at Manchester United. An 11-goal tally is respectable, but absolutely nowhere near enough for somebody of his price tag. Especially when you consider he failed to score in any of his first six Premier League appearances.
However, the second half of the campaign was much more productive for the Slovenian, who netted nine goals in his last 14 appearances. Four of his 11 goals came from the bench, with nobody in the Premier League scoring more as a substitute.
With all that in mind, the building blocks of a lethal striker are clearly there, while Sesko will benefit from the set-piece prowess of Youri Tielemans, alongside the existing elite creativity of Bruno Fernandes. And that’s not to mention the likes of Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha around him.
The first port of call for Sesko is convincing Michael Carrick he should be the starter. Being a super sub is great, but it’s not a role any self-respecting striker actually wants. That’s especially true for a No.9 as ambitious as Sesko.
He clearly has what it takes. Sesko’s last season at RB Leipzig saw him net 21 goals across all competitions, while he was a regular source of Champions League output during his time in Germany. What’s more, his average of 0.61 goals per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season was third only to Haaland (0.82) and Junior Kroupi among players with at least 25% of minutes.
Do not write him off.
