Jurgen Klopp’s time as a Premier League manager is close to ending.

We’re just over two months away from Klopp’s final game as Liverpool manager, whether that be the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League season or the Europa League final. The German has been in English football since 2015, lifting Liverpool back to their former glory.

Over his years in the Premier League, Klopp enjoyed rivalries with many managers, but that catches the eye the most, has been Pep Guardiola. A battle of philosophies and two teams at the top of their game, Liverpool’s matches against Man City have been thrilling.

But what about Klopp’s record against specific teams? Who has Klopp fared best against? And who is his bogey team?

We took a look at the current Premier League clubs Klopp has faced across all competitions and broke down their records from worst to best.

Sheffield United

  • Games: 5
  • Wins: 0
  • Draws: 0
  • Losses: 5
  • Win %: 0%

The only current Premier League side against whom Klopp has a perfect record is Sheffield United, who have lost all five of their matches against the German. And there is still a chance for one more before he leaves. But these haven’t been thrashings, with three 2-0 wins for Liverpool and 2-1 and 1-0.

Luton

  • Games: 2
  • Wins: 0
  • Draws: 1
  • Losses: 1
  • Win %: 0%

There have been just two games for Luton against Klopp’s Liverpool, both in the Premier League this season. The first was a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road that Luton was so close to winning before Luis Diaz’s last-gasp equaliser. But Liverpool asserted their dominance in the return fixture with a 4-1 win at Anfield.

Tottenham

  • Games: 19
  • Wins: 2
  • Draws: 6
  • Losses: 11
  • Win %: 5.3%

Tottenham faced Liverpool in their first game under Klopp and held the Reds to a goalless draw. There would be no separating these two sides in the next two games either before Liverpool finally got a win in their fourth meeting — in the fourth round of the 2016/17 EFL Cup. They also won again in the league that season before Tottenham got their first victory over Klopp with a 4-1 win in October 2017.

But then Liverpool’s long unbeaten run began, with nine wins and three draws. One of those wins, of course, was the 2019 Champions League final, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi sealing Liverpool’s sixth crown and Klopp’s first trophy at Anfield. Tottenham did end their winless run against Liverpool earlier this season, albeit in a very controversial fashion. And there’s still one more game to go.

Everton

  • Games: 18
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 6
  • Losses: 11
  • Win %: 5.6%

The one team that would have hoped for a better record against Klopp at Liverpool, Everton, have been on the wrong end of a one-sided derby. The Toffees have managed just one win in their 18 games against Klopp’s Liverpool, beating the Reds as part of their poor Anfield run in the 2020/21 season. But since then, Klopp has overseen four wins and a draw from the past five, with four consecutive clean sheets. There’s a chance for one more victory for Klopp, too, or an opportunity for Everton to get a second win.

Newcastle

  • Games: 16
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 4
  • Losses: 11
  • Win %: 6.3%

Another team to win their first game against Klopp’s Liverpool, Newcastle beat the Reds in December 2015 thanks to an own goal from Martin Skrtel and Georginio Wijnaldum’s strike. Newcastle went unbeaten in their first three games against Klopp, drawing the next two. And then it all changed. Klopp would go on to win 11 of his next 13 games against the Magpies, ending with six consecutive victories. Newcastle will be glad to see the back of him.

Wolves

  • Games: 15
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 3
  • Losses: 11
  • Win %: 6.7%

Wolves also had a good run against Klopp’s Liverpool in the early stages, winning the first game while still in the Championship — knocking the Reds out of the FA Cup in 2017. They repeated the feat two years later, though that cup win was between two league victories for Liverpool. Klopp then won seven games in a row against Wolves and eight out of nine (alongside a draw) before the Midlands club got their third victory, beating the Reds 3-0 last season. But Liverpool won their previous two games, with one more game to come.

Aston Villa

  • Games: 11
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 1
  • Losses: 9
  • Win %: 9.1%

The team that handed Klopp his most significant loss as Liverpool manager, Aston Villa’s 7-2 win over the Reds in October 2020, was their only victory against the Germans. Of the remaining 10 games, Liverpool won nine, also drawing 1-1 at Anfield in the penultimate week of last season. It started with a big scoreline for Klopp, as Liverpool beat Aston Villa 6-0 in the Germans’ first game against the Villans.

Fulham

  • Games: 9
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 3
  • Losses: 5
  • Win %: 11.1%

Liverpool knocked Fulham out of the EFL Cup semi-finals this season en route to lifting the trophy, the first of three competitions Klopp could win in his final campaign. There has been just one win for the Cottagers against Klopp during his time in England, again coming during that poor run of results at Anfield in 2021. The three games so far this season have been close, with a 4-3 and 2-1 win for Liverpool alongside a 1-1 draw.

Crystal Palace

  • Games: 17
  • Wins: 2
  • Draws: 2
  • Losses: 13
  • Win %: 11.8%

Crystal Palace were the first team to beat Klopp at Liverpool, beating the Reds in his seventh game in charge, leaving Anfield with a 2-1 win in November 2015 thanks to goals from Yannick Bolasie and Scott Dann. Palace won two of their first four games against Klopp’s Liverpool, with both victories coming at Anfield. But since then, it’s been one-sided. Liverpool have won 11 of the last 13 games against Crystal Palace, including a 7-0 victory at Selhurst Park in 2020.

Arsenal

  • Games: 23
  • Wins: 3
  • Draws: 9
  • Losses: 11
  • Win %: 13.0%

Arsenal was one of the teams Klopp faced before moving to the Premier League. The German went up against the Gunners five times while manager of Borussia Dortmund. In that run, Arsenal won three games with a Klopp win and a draw. But since Klopp joined Liverpool, this has been pretty one-sided.

During his time in England, Klopp faced Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, and Mikel Arteta as Arsenal managers, winning 11 times and losing three. Two penalty-shootout defeats, one in the Community Shield and the other in the EFL Cup, both in 2020/21, were not included in those two losses. In his final season in the Premier League, Klopp won one, drew one, and lost one against Arsenal in all competitions.

Bournemouth

  • Games: 15
  • Wins: 2
  • Draws: 1
  • Losses: 12
  • Win %: 13.3%

Bournemouth surely will hold a special place in Klopp’s heart regarding Liverpool, as they were the first team he beat after taking charge. Klopp had drawn his first three games as Liverpool boss in October 2015 before welcoming Bournemouth to Anfield in the EFL Cup. The Reds won 1-0, thanks to a goal from Nathaniel Clyne, and the journey to greatness began. Klopp generally enjoyed managing against Bournemouth, with 12 wins in total and just two defeats. In particular, there was the run of seven consecutive victories with 28 goals and just one conceded — including the 9-0 thrashing at Anfield.

Burnley

  • Games: 14
  • Wins: 2
  • Draws: 2
  • Losses: 12
  • Win %: 14.3%

Burnley actually won their first game against Klopp’s Liverpool, beating the Reds 2-0 at Turf Moor after their promotion back to the Premier League in 2015/16. They were also the team to end Liverpool’s 68-game unbeaten streak at Anfield in the 2020/21 season with a shock 1-0 victory thanks to Ashley Barnes’ penalty. But that’s all the joy Burnley got against Klopp. Of the other 12 games, Klopp’s Liverpool beat Burnley 11 times, including home and away this season.

West Ham

  • Games: 19
  • Wins: 3
  • Draws: 3
  • Losses: 13
  • Win %: 15.8%

Another team to enjoy their early matches against Klopp, West Ham went unbeaten in their first four games vs Liverpool after the German took over, winning two and drawing two. Three of those games came within the space of just over a month and saw West Ham knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup (after a replay). But then — and we’ve been saying this a lot — Liverpool settled under Klopp and took control of this matchup. Liverpool have won 13 of their last 15 games against West Ham, including each of the past five.

Brentford

  • Games: 6
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 1
  • Losses: 4
  • Win %: 16.7%

Another team with just one victory over Klopp’s Liverpool, Brentford’s meeting with the Reds have all come in the Premier League. The sole victory came in January 2023 and finished an equal start to the head-to-head, with one win each and a draw. But Klopp worked it out. Liverpool have won their last three games against Brentford, including home and away in Klopp’s final two games against the Bees.

Chelsea

  • Games: 24
  • Wins: 4
  • Draws: 12
  • Losses: 8
  • Win %: 16.7%

Four of Chelsea’s 24 games against Klopp have been in cup finals. Three have gone to penalties, and Liverpool have won all four. The most recent victory game in the 2023/24 EFL Cup final, with Liverpool scoring the winner in the 118th minute. In 2021/22, Liverpool beat Chelsea in both the EFL and FA Cup finals on penalties while also beating the Blues in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup on penalties. Draws have been the main feature of Klopp’s games against Chelsea, with a seven-game run that only ended this season with the 4-1 win at Anfield- though two of those draws did end in Liverpool penalty wins. Klopp leaves Liverpool having not lost to Chelsea since March 2021.

Nottingham Forest

  • Games: 5
  • Wins: 1
  • Draws: 0
  • Losses: 4
  • Win %: 20%

Nottingham Forest first faced Klopp in the FA Cup in 2021/22, losing 1-0 in the quarter-finals. In their first Premier League meeting, Forest got their own back, with a 1-0 win at the City Ground—capitalising on Liverpool’s slow starts in an early Saturday kick-off. But since then, it’s been all Liverpool, with the Reds winning each of their last three against Forest.

Brighton

  • Games: 14
  • Wins: 3
  • Draws: 4
  • Losses: 7
  • Win %: 21.4%

Klopp enjoyed his first six games against Brighton, going unbeaten with four clean sheets and an aggregate scoreline of 16-2. However, Brighton have turned into one of the teams Klopp hates to set his Liverpool side up against. Liverpool have won just one of their last eight games against Brighton, a 2-0 victory in 2021/22. Since then, Brighton have been unbeaten in four games against Klopp with two wins, including knocking Liverpool out of the FA Cup fourth round last season. There’s one more chance for Klopp to get his revenge, though.

Man City

  • Games: 25
  • Wins: 6
  • Draws: 9
  • Losses: 10
  • Win %: 24%

Manchester City have technically beaten Jurgen Klopp eight times, but two of those victories came on penalties — one in the 2015/16 EFL Cup final and another in the 2019 Community Shield. It hasn’t always been Klopp vs Guardiola, either. In his first three games against Man City as Liverpool manager, Klopp faced Manuel Pellegrini. He also took on Roberto Mancini when Dortmund faced Man City in the 2012/13 Champions League, winning at home and securing a draw at the Etihad.

But this is still a rivalry in which Klopp has done better, winning three consecutive games against Man City twice. The first game in 2018 when Klopp’s Liverpool won in the league and then knocked Man City out of the Champions League quarter-finals. And then, Liverpool beat Man City in the 2022/23 FA Cup semi-final, the 2022 Community Shield and their first Premier League meeting of the 2022/23 campaign. However, since then, Man City have been unbeaten in four games against Liverpool with two league draws this season. There will be no more clashes between Klopp and Man City for now.

Man Utd

  • Games: 20
  • Wins: 5
  • Draws: 8
  • Losses: 7
  • Win %: 25%

The team to end Liverpool’s quadruple hopes in Klopp’s final season would have been a fitting end to the rivalry, but Man Utd must face the German one more time. Man Utd did win their first game against Klopp’s Liverpool and enjoyed a generally positive record in this fixture, though there were a lot of draws. Seven of the first 13 games between Klopp and Man Utd finished level, with three wins for the Red Devils and three for Liverpool.

But it has been rough riding for Man Utd since. They’ve lost four of the past seven, including a 7-0 thrashing at Anfield last season. There is a chance for one more win for Man Utd, though, which they’d love to get to add another dampener to Klopp’s farewell.
