Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 putting themselves eight points off the top five, while Tottenham drop off to just five points off the relegation zone.
Eddie Howe’s side fought hard to take all three points, getting a deserved opener just before half-time. They then had to fight back from Archie Gray’s 64th-minute equaliser.
But Jacob Ramsey provided a blow to Tottenham after they got back in the game, scoring just four minutes later, with a first time sweeping finish across the goalkeeper with his left foot.

Newcastle won the battle
Howe set his side up in their usual 4-3-3, with Kieran Trippier pushing forward to support Anthony Elanga down the right side, while Dan Burn was slightly more reserved at left-back.
Newcastle were aggressive from the start, focused on winning their one-on-one battles all across the pitch. They won 57% of their duels in the first half and holding 56% possession.

The Magpies pinned Tottenham in their own half for large periods of the first half. They generated 1.63 Expected Goals from 11 shots and created two big chances.
Newcastle got the goal they deserved in added time in the first half, going 1-0 up thanks to a header from Malick Thiaw, coming from the second phase of a set-piece scenario.

Bruno Guimaraes’ masterclass
Bruno Guimaraes put in an excellent performance in the middle of the park, keeping things ticking for Newcastle who controlled a large majority of the game both on and off the ball.
In the first half, the Brazilian midfielder was the heartbeat of the build up unit, consistently dropping to pick the ball up in central areas, looking to play penetrative passes between the lines and controlling the game on the ball.

The second half performance saw Newcastle hold less of the ball, only having 37% possession compared to the 56% in the first half.
Guimaraes dominated in a different way in the second half, breaking up play in the middle, winning his duels and being a solid foundation to protect the Newcastle defensive line, screening the back four.
Thomas Frank in trouble?
Tottenham now sit just three points above Nottingham Forest in 17th and five points above 18th-placed West Ham United.
Frank’s side have picked up one point in their last three games, with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City, followed by losses against Manchester United and now Newcastle.
With Frank’s job on the edge just a few weeks ago, before beating Dortmund in the Champions League, the Danish coach is surely going to be under severe pressure again now, with their next game coming in 12 days time against Arsenal.
Whether it be Frank or someone else in charge, a loss against Arsenal could leave Tottenham just two points off the drop if results go against them. A daunting thought for many Tottenham fans.
