How Jurgen Klopp could set up Liverpool for the 2019/20 season

Liverpool have not pulled up any trees during the summer transfer window. Records have not tumbled and marquee signings have not arrived.

However, given the hugely successful season Jurgen Klopp has just overseen, that should come as no surprise.

The Reds missed out on a maiden Premier League title by a whisker but soon eased the disappointment by picking up their sixth European Cup.

And all that means it has been a case of minor tweaks rather than major overhaul at Anfield this summer.

Sepp van den Berg has arrived from PEC Zwolle for a minor fee while Harvey Elliott – the youngest player in Premier League history – has swapped west London for Merseyside.

Neither player is expected to make a sizeable impact on the first team this season, but there are still some big decisions for Klopp to make in regards to his team’s set up.

Will the German coach stick with his favoured 4-3-3 formation? Or could it be time to try something new as he attempts to go one better and outdo Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City?

Of course, the front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are going nowhere.

But Rhian Brewster is pushing for game time, having enjoyed an impressive pre-season, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return from a long-term injury is set to shake things up in midfield.

Joe Gomez will fancy his chances of sewing up the second centre-back spot alongside Virgil van Dijk while it remains to be seen how the versatile figures of James Milner, Divock Origi and Adam Lallana will be deployed.

And, with a few days left to do business before the window closes, there may yet be some new faces arriving to add a new dimension to the Reds’ talented squad.
