Every Premier League club ranked by their current trophy drought

Sunday 16th March 2025. A day that Newcastle United fans will cherish for the rest of their lives.

The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup Final, ending a 70-year wait for a major trophy. They had won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968-69, but not many were counting that as a major trophy. And even if it was, that’s still a 56-year wait.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were the goalscoring heroes, netting in either half to guarantee they’ll never pay for another drink in the city of  Newcastle.

Whatever you looked back to, Newcastle’s wait drops back down to zero. But there are still some massive clubs that are enduring quite the barren spell. So, with that in mind, we’ve ranked every current Premier League club by their current major trophy drought.

To clarify a major trophy includes the top-flight league title, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Here’s how they rank from the most recent winners to the sides still waiting to break their duck.

1. Newcastle

  • Last trophy won: Carabao Cup
  • Year: 2025
  • Trophy drought: 13 days

Eddie Howe’s men had the chance to end their trophy drought two seasons so, also in the Carabao Cup final. They suffered defeat then, but didn’t have to wait too long for a second chance. Up against Liverpool, Newcastle were the slight underdogs going into the game but they outplayed the Reds and were well-deserving of their triumph. Fans will be hoping there’s not another 70-year wait for the next trophy…

2. Man Utd

  • Last trophy won: FA Cup
  • Year: 2025
  • Trophy drought: 308 days

Erik ten Hag received a lot of criticism for his time as Manchester United manager. But the Dutchman did win a trophy in each of his two full seasons at Old Trafford. His final trophy, in what was expected to be his final game, was the FA Cup at the end of the 2024-25 season. The Red Devils beat rivals Manchester City at Wembley, having lost the FA Cup final to the same opponents a year earlier.

3. Man City

  • Last trophy won: Premier League
  • Year: 2024
  • Trophy drought: 314 days

Although Man City lost the 2024 FA Cup final, just six days earlier they had lifted the Premier League trophy for a fourth consecutive season. It was something never done before in English’s men’s top-flight history, as Man City finished two points clear at the top of the table.

4. Liverpool

  • Last trophy won: Carabao Cup
  • Year: 2024
  • Trophy drought: 1 year, 33 days

The wait will reset to zero at the end of the season, as Liverpool are running away with the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first year as Reds manager. But for now, their most recent trophy remains the Carabao Cup, in Jurgen Klopp’s last season — just over one year ago.

5. West Ham

  • Last trophy won: Europa Conference League
  • Year: 2023
  • Trophy drought: 1 year, 9 months, 22 days

Jarrod Bowen’s 90th-minute strike against Fiorentina ended West Ham United‘s 43-year wait for a major trophy. They became just the second side after Roma to win the Europa Conference League, earning each player a place in the history books.

6. Chelsea

  • Last trophy won: Champions League
  • Year: 2021
  • Trophy drought: 3 years, 10 months,

After suffering defeat in the final with PSG the year before, Thomas Tuchel went one step further with Chelsea in 2020-21, as the Blues lifted the Champions League trophy for the second time in their history. Kai Havertz’s first-half strike was the deciding goal of the game as they beat Man City in Porto.

7. Leicester

  • Last trophy won: FA Cup
  • Year: 2021
  • Trophy drought: 3 years, 10 months, 14 days

Leicester City look set to be relegated from the Premier League this season, a sorry fall for the former champions. But that wasn’t their most recent trophy. The Foxes lifted the FA Cup in 2021, beating Chelsea in the final at Wembley.

8. Arsenal

  • Last trophy won: FA Cup
  • Year: 2020
  • Trophy drought: 4 years, 7 months, 28 days

Arsenal made history in 2020, as they became the most successful side in FA Cup history, bringing home the trophy for the 14th time. Despite going behind after five minutes, Mikel Arteta’s side bounced back thanks to a brace from forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley behind closed doors.

9. Tottenham

  • Last trophy won: Carling Cup
  • Year: 2008
  • Trophy drought: 17 years

It has now been 17 years since Tottenham Hotspur last lifted major silverware, the longest of any ‘Big Six’ side. Juande Ramos’ men needed extra time to see off Chelsea, as Jonathan Woodgate’s header ensured the League Cup headed back to north London, after a Dimitar Berbatov penalty had cancelled out Didier Drogba’s opener.

10. Aston Villa

  • Last trophy won: Coca Cola Cup
  • Year: 1996
  • Trophy drought: 29 years

Goals from Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke completed a 3-0 victory over Leeds United at a packed-out Wembley to win the ‘Coca Cola Cup’ as it was known back then for Aston Villa. It was the fifth time they had won the League Cup, a joint record at the time.

11. Everton

  • Last trophy won: FA Cup
  • Year: 1995
  • Trophy drought: 30 years

Despite making their worst-ever start to a league season and fighting relegation, Everton ended the 1994-95 season with silverware, as they beat Man Utd 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup. Paul Rideout was the hero in a 1-0 win; their fifth major trophy in an 11-year period but, sadly, their last to date.

12. Nottingham Forest

  • Last trophy won: League Cup
  • Year: 1990
  • Trophy drought: 35 years

The late, great, Brian Clough won his 12th and final trophy of his time at Nottingham Forest, as the Tricky Trees won the Football League Cup for the fourth time in the previous 13 seasons. But they’re now in the 2024-25 FA Cup semi-finals.

13. Ipswich

  • Last trophy won: Uefa Cup
  • Year: 1981
  • Trophy drought: 44 years

This may be a bit of a surprise to some non-Ipswich Town fans. The Tractor Boys’ last major trophy was a European one, lifting the Uefa Cup in 1981. The Uefa Cup final was still a two-legged affair in those days, with Ipswich beating AZ Alkmaar 5-4 on aggregate. They won the first leg 3-0 at Portman Road and just about got away with a 4-2 defeat in the return match.

14. Wolves

  • Last trophy won: League  Cup
  • Year: 1980
  • Trophy drought: 45 years

Wolverhampton Wanderers saw off the holders and the European champions at the time Nottingham Forest, to lift the League Cup for just the second time in their history, after also taking home the trophy in 1974.

15. Southampton

  • Last trophy won: FA Cup
  • Year: 1976
  • Trophy drought: 49 years

Southampton will be in the Championship next season, and their major trophy drought will probably stretch into 50 years. Saints’ last success came in the 1976 FA Cup final, when they beat Man Utd 1-0 at Wembley.

16. Brighton

  • Last trophy won: N/A
  • Year: N/A
  • Trophy drought: 123 years

Brighton and Hove Albion finished as runners-up in the 1983 FA Cup final, the only major domestic cup final of their history.

17. Bournemouth

  • Last trophy won: N/A
  • Year: N/A
  • Trophy drought: 126 years

Bournemouth rose from the third division to the Premier League, but are yet to win a major trophy. But they are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

18. Brentford

  • Last trophy won: N/A
  • Year: N/A
  • Trophy drought: 135 years

Brentford have never made the final of a major domestic competition.

19. Fulham

  • Last trophy won: N/A
  • Year: N/A
  • Trophy drought: 146 years

Fulham made it all the way to the Europa League final back in 2010, but a Diego Forlan strike in extra time broke their hearts as Atletico Madrid took home the trophy.

20. Crystal Palace

  • Last trophy won: N/A
  • Year: N/A
  • Trophy drought: 164 years

Crystal Palace have finished as FA Cup runners-up on two occasions, in 1989-90 and 2015-16 when Jesse Lingard won the game for Man Utd in extra-time.  They’re still in with a chance of winning the 2024-25 FA Cup, in the semi-finals.
