Saka’s heir or Odegaard’s challenger? Where Ethan Nwaneri fits in Arsenal’s attack after new contract

Arsenal signalled their intent to remain a breeding ground for elite young talent with the signing of Ethan Nwaneri to a new five-year contract.

The Gunners have never been short of starlets, but the crop right now is particularly strong, with Nwaneri joined by the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly, Max Dowman, Josh Nichols and Marli Salmon.

But the future of Nwaneri was in doubt, with the 18-year-old sensationally linked to Chelsea this summer. Now, fears of losing the teenager have been put to rest with a new deal that keeps him at the Emirates until 2030 at least.

“Signing this contract means everything to me,” said Nwaneri, who is the youngest player in Premier League history. “I see this as my first real season in men’s senior football, as part of the squad in the changing room.

“I’m so excited for what I can bring to the team, I want to help us win as much as possible and bring happiness and glory to the club. This is where I feel at home.”

Ethan Nwaneri: Arsenal breakout star already posting elite numbers

Nwaneri may see this as his ‘first real season in men’s football’, but he’s hardly a player without experience.

Despite his tender age, the London-born wonderkid already has nine goals and two assists in 39 senior appearances for Arsenal — including four goals and two assists in 28 Premier League outings.

All 11 of his direct goal involvements came during what was a breakout 2024/25 campaign, with Nwaneri clocking up just shy of 1,400 minutes across all competitions.

In Premier League play alone, Nwaneri averaged 1.62 chances created per 90 minutes last season, alongside 2.43 shots, 0.91 shots on target and a massive 3.75 completed dribbles — the latter placing him first among Arsenal players.

Nwaneri’s average of 0.61 direct goal involvements per 90 minutes was second only to Bukayo Saka (0.83), highlighting the incredible end product the England youth international — who played six times in this summer’s U21 Euros triumph — already has.

All of that is without mentioning his two goals in seven Champions League outings, netting against La Liga outfit Girona and Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

He won’t turn 19 until March, but Nwaneri has already proven he has the sort of end product that can very quickly see him become a regular starter for Arsenal.

Where will Ethan Nwaneri fit in for Arsenal in 2025/26?

Something that really plays into Nwaneri’s favour as he looks to earn a frequent place in Mikel Arteta’s line-up is his versatility.

Nwaneri is quick and skilful, but also supremely intelligent and technically gifted with the ball at his feet — his dribbling output going alongside 17.72 final third passes completed per 90, placing him fifth among Arsenal players.

“He never [looks nervous], he’s so composed, calm and confident in his ability,” said Gunners boss Arteta after Nwaneri’s goal against Girona in January. “At 17, scoring a really important goal in the Champions League is not very common.”

All of that comes together to see Nwaneri’s senior appearances for Arsenal so far split 18-12 between right wing and attacking midfield, with another outing as an auxiliary striker — scoring against Girona in that appearance — for good measure.

Saka has the right flank locked down for Arsenal right now, while through the middle, the likes of Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino have the forward-thinking roles in hand.

However, they’ll all need rest and rotation throughout the season if Arsenal are to stay fresh enough to once again challenge for the title and go deep in cup competitions. And that’s without any unfortunate injuries and suspensions that are picked up along the way.

It’s easy to see Nwaneri now being the first choice when it comes to covering for fellow Hale End product Saka — just as he did so on many occasions last season when the England international was injured.

But his skill set lends brilliantly to coming in to play behind new striker Viktor Gyokeres and, indeed, he’s played the majority of his minutes this pre-season as a No.10, looking particularly exciting against Villarreal when he completed a match-high five dribbles, attempted three shots and created one chance.

Nwaneri is a little more technically refined on the flank than Saka, but more blisteringly brilliant in the final third than Odegaard.

Arteta now needs to find the best spot for a player who is no longer just a promising talent, but a genuine candidate to become a regular starter for Arsenal.

It’s a headache for Arteta, but one of the best he could possibly hope for as he once again prepares to go toe-to-toe with the talent-stacked Liverpool and Manchester City.
