Dream, realistic, wildcard, Squawka Suggests: Who should sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer?

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is looking for a new club.

The Englishman left Everton this summer, ending a nine-year stay at the Toffees. Across those nine years, Calvert-Lewin played 273 times and scored 71 goals in all competitions.

But the final few years of his spell were hampered by injuries and poor form, so it was the right time for the two to part ways.

The question is, where does Calvert-Lewin go next? He’s still only 28 so could be good for a few years at another club. Not to mention he’s Englishman so would be a nice signing to fill a homegrown spot for a Premier League club.

We’ve looked at some potential clubs below.

Dream: Man Utd

Manchester United aren’t the club they once were. But many players still dream of playing for the Red Devils — to call the Theatre of Dreams their home. And that could be the case for Calvert-Lewin, who is 3/1 with bet365 to join Man Utd this summer.

Man Utd are in desperate need for a striker. They were reportedly chasing Viktor Gyokeres but look to have lost that battle. Benjamin Sesko is another option, but Calvert-Lewin could fill a gap.

He wouldn’t be the starting striker, but he could be a good addition to the squad — especially on a free transfer. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored seven goals between them in the Premier League last season, despite playing a combined 3,405 minutes. Hojlund was the higher-scoring of the pair, with four goals. But they both netted 0.2 goals per 90 minutes — the same return as Calvert-Lewin managed for Everton in 2024-25.

Calvert-Lewin’s conversion rate pales in comparison at just 7.14% last season compared to Hojlund’s 16% and Zirkzee’s 15.79%. But Calvert-Lewin brings volume. The Englishman averaged 2.4 shots per 90 in the league last season, almost as many as Zirkee (1.3) and Hojlund (1.2) combined. He also managed 1.2 shots on target per 90, again more than Zirkee’s 0.8 and Hojlund’s 0.6.

Calvert-Lewin also got involved more in the danger areas. The Englishman averaged 5.4 touches in the opposition box per 90 in the Premier League last season. Remember, this was while playing for Everton. Man Utd’s Zirkzee and Hojlund averaged 4.0 and 3.7 touches in the opposition box per 90, respectively.

And then there’s the aerial output. Although Man Utd may not want to go long, it’s a good second plan to have just in case. And Calvert-Lewin won 50.59% of his aerial duels in the Premier League last season. That was a weakness for Man Utd’s strikers. Zirkzee was the better performing of the two, but even then his aerial duel success was only 29.87%. Hojlund won 24.6% of his aerial duels.

Perhaps the only negative for Calvert-Lewin at Man Utd would be the pressure. Not just on him as a striker to hit the ground running, but on the team as a whole to make sure their nightmare 2024-25 isn’t repeated.

Realistic: Newcastle

This could feasibly be both a realistic move and Calvert-Lewin’s dream. Calvert-Lewin has reportedly held talks with Newcastle United over the move, so it’s one that he’s willing to make. In fact, Newcastle are 6/4 favourites with bet365 to sign Calvert-Lewin by the end of the summer transfer window. The key selling point is, of course, the fact that Newcastle have Champions League football in 2025-26.

Once again, this wouldn’t be a move for Calvert-Lewin to be the starting striker. He’s not replacing Alexander Isak. This is to provide support, filling the role left by Callum Wilson who recently announced his departure.

Wilson only played 357 minutes in the Premier League last season, suffering with injuries. He managed just six shots in that time, with only one on target but no goals. But when look over the past two seasons, you can see that he was a very capable deputy for Isak.

Calvert-Lewin does bring a slightly different style of backup, though. Wilson is all about scoring goals. He averaged 0.6 goals per 90 in the Premier League since the start of 2023-24, with 2.75 shots. Calvert-Lewin averaged just 0.24 goals despite taking 2.91 shots per 90. Wilson also averaged 1.48 shots on target, with shooting accuracy of 53.66% — outperforming Calvert-Lewin in both metrics.

But Calvert-Lewin had more success in duels, because Wilson wasn’t really that sort of player for Newcastle. Which may be why they’re going for Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin averaged 0.61 possessions won in the attacking third per 90 in the Premier League in 2024-25. Only Bruno Guimaraes (0.63) averaged more among Newcastle’s regular players. Isak ranked third, averaging 0.59 possessions won in the attacking third per 90. Calvert-Lewin did lead the way against Newcastle players for his 4.8 aerial duels won, though, with Dan Burn unsurprisingly the highest Magpie from 2024-25 at 4.0 per 90.

With talks in place, it’s clear that Calvert-Lewin would be happy with a lesser role. There’s no real downsides to this.

Wildcard: Como

There are a number of international clubs being linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin. But Como are the most interesting. Como performed well on their return to Serie A last season, finishing 10th under the stewardship of Cesc Fabregas.

There’s already an English player — and ex-Everton teammate — at Como, with Dele Alli joining in January. Calvert-Lewin is 18/1 with bet365 to join the Italian club. But what makes this move so intriguing?

It’s not just because there are Premier League links, with former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Patrick Cutrone also on the team. Serie A has been the home of a few striker renaissances recently, and where best for Calvert-Lewin to show his physical traits.

Como also have a handful of strikers that haven’t really impressed.

Both Andrea Belotti and Alberto Cerri spent the second half of last season on loan, and Como may look to sell if they can. While Alessandro Gabrielloni played just 129 league minutes across 15 games in 2024-25.

Como’s main attacking options in the league last season were the aforementioned Cutrone, and Anastasios Douvikas. But even then, Douvikas played just over 500 minutes as backup. Calvert-Lewin out-shot both players with his 2.4 per 90 in the Premier League — with Cutrone managing 2.2 and Douvikas 2.1. Calvert-Lewin also matched Cutrone’s 1.2 shots on target.

Douvikas does shine in the comparison with it comes to conversion rate, assists, take-ons completed and fouls won. But there is the caveat of his lower number of minutes, and game states that he would have been brought on in. Calvert-Lewin does also come off the worst for touches in the opposition box. But it’s ever so slightly at 5.4 to Douvikas’ 5.7 and Cutrone’s 5.5 And the closeness only serves to show that he’d be exactly the kind of striker Como would want.

Squawka Suggests: Fulham

Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, outside of Man Utd and Newcastle. West Ham United are one, but it feels like the fans would expect a lot from Calvert-Lewin, which he probably isn’t ready to deal with. While Calvert-Lewin is perhaps a bit too close to Danny Welbeck in terms of availability to sign for Brighton and Hove Albion. Fulham are an interesting option, and they’re 20/1 with bet365 to sign Calvert-Lewin.

Fulham have just two recognised strikers in their squad at the moment — Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz. Jimenez was the Cottagers’ top scorer last season with 12 goals, averaging 0.43 per 90. Muniz was the best scorer in the squad per 90, with 0.76 goals (eight in total).

But Muniz’s future is in doubt, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian. A move to Leeds does look likely. So Fulham need a replacement, and someone who can challenge Jimenez as a starter.

Now, Calvert-Lewin isn’t as good as Jimenez. In fact, he trails Jimenez in a lot of attacking metrics. But they are similar players. Perhaps the best reason for Fulham signing Calvert-Lewin is the aerial prowess.

The Englishman’s aerial duel success rate of 50.59% is better than Jimenez’s 47.67%, even though it is close. And Calvert-Lewin also won per aerial duels per 90 last season than Jimenez. It was another close battle and Fulham aren’t getting a massive improvement given Jimenez’s ability. But it at its most basic, it shows that Calvert-Lewin would be a suitable replacement in Fulham’s system.
