Dream, realistic, wildcard, Squawka Suggests: Where could Anthony Gordon go next?

Anthony Gordon is looking likely to leave Newcastle United this summer, with the Magpies set to miss out on Champions League football.

The Englishman has scored 17 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions this season, while also providing five assists. Ten of those 10 goals have come in the Champions League, including strikes against Barcelona, Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen.

Gordon’s contract runs until 2030, so Newcastle will likely be looking for a bidding war this summer to squeeze as much value from the player as possible. And there are plenty of clubs interested.

Dream: Bayern Munich

The dream move for Gordon this summer might take him away from England. To join German champions Bayern Munich alongside Harry Kane and Michael Olise.

Both Luis Diaz and Serge Gnabry have been vital this season. They’ve helped to balance Bayern Munich’s attacking dynamics, constantly looking to make runs beyond the last line and dynamic off-ball movements.

Kane plays as a centre-forward to likes to drop deep, testing the opposition centre-backs’ resolve. And whether they are willing to follow him. It creates space for other attackers to run into, which Diaz and Gnabry have benefited from this season.

Gordon has played both on the left and through the middle at Newcastle, so he could carry out the same roles of other Bayern attackers. Whether that be Diaz as the left-wing runner, or Gnabry in the more dynamic attacking midfield role, looking to make counter movements around Kane.

Having an elite creator like Olise is another clear advantage for Gordon. The Frenchman is not only another playmaker capable of picking him out, but also attracts multiple markers towards his flank. This leaves the opposite side underloaded, which would give Gordon better conditions to thrive on the left.

Realistic: Chelsea

Another potential landing point for Gordon is Chelsea. It’s perhaps more realistic than a move to the Allianz Arena. The Blues are rumoured to be looking to add more Premier League experienced players in the coming window.

Last summer, Chelsea signed Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens, two left-wingers who have both failed to impress in their debut season at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are aiming to build an effective attacking unit around the likes of Cole Palmer and Estevao.

Chelsea lack runners in the frontline to stretch the pitch and get the best from their creative players, having replaced Nicolas Jackson with Joao Pedro in the summer. And that’s where Gordon could clearly fit the bill.

Another reason Chelsea could be interested in a move for Gordon is his off-ball intensity. The Blues have been outrun in all 34 of their Premier League games this season, lacking a base level of workrate off the ball which is a non-negotiable at the elite level.

Gordon would provide a strong runner profile to pair with the likes of Palmer, Estevao and Enzo Fernandez, while also helping to add intensity to their front press, two key areas of improvement for Chelsea in the coming window.

Wildcard: Barcelona

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona could be a bit of a wildcard option for Gordon to thrive in. Both Raphinha and Marcus Rashford have shone in their time in Spain.

As far as principles go, Gordon and Flick are a great match. They both hold vertical attacking ideas looking to exploit space with relentless runs and counter pressing intensity paired with a high press backed with a high defensive line.

Rashford is on loan from Manchester United, and his future still up in the air. Raphinha, meanwhile, has struggled for fitness this season, picking up multiple hamstring injuries.

Gordon would be the perfect left-wing addition to join Barcelona’s attack, while also providing an option as both a No.10 and a No.9. He’d add versatility to Flick’s options, something he has already enjoyed with Ferran Torres this season.

Squawka Suggests: Arsenal

Mikel Arteta will likely also be looking to add more attacking options this summer. Even if Arsenal do get across the line and win the Premier League.

With a lot of their attacking threat coming from set-pieces this season, an athletic winger who adds transition threat, pace and off-ball movement would likely be of interest. Especially as Arteta looks to bolster his options with complimentary profiles for the likes of Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka.

While Eze hasn’t set the place on fire this season, the extra risk taking and bravery he adds in attacking midfield areas are clear,. Paired with the right runner, it could see both thrive at a higher level.

The same applies for the likes of Saka who can attract multiple markers and leave underloaded isolations on the left for Gordon. But also someone like Kai Havertz, who can make those dropping actions to open space for the England winger to run into.

Off the ball, it wouldn’t be an issue either. Which is another key factor as to why we could see Arteta wanting to make this happen. Gordon can seamlessly fit into any out of possession scheme, pressing with intensity, but also having a good understanding of his role in the press having worked under Eddie Howe.
