Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions are currently propping up the table after going their opening three games of the 2022/23 Nations League winless, including a 1-0 reversal at the hands of Tuesday’s opposition in Budapest. That remains Hungary’s only win of the group so far, but Marco Rossi’s Magyars will be in good spirits after recently claiming a point off Germany last time out, positioning them second in the table.
England team news
Southgate is expected to ring the changes once again, with Harry Kane likely to slot in for Tammy Abraham, while Kalvin Phillips may get a run-out from the start over James Ward-Prowse. Declan Rice is in need of a rest, so Southgate could be tempted to draft in either Conor Gallagher or Jude Bellingham, while there remains question marks of Phil Foden’s availability.
Aaron Ramsdale started between the sticks for England against Italy last time out and kept the nation’s only clean sheet this month after Jordan Pickford conceded against Hungary and Germany. It remains to be seen whether Southgate will shuffle the goalkeeping pack at the World Cup later this year, but Ramsdale insists he is giving it his all to oust Pickford.
“By no means I am second choice,” Ramsdale told talkSPORT. “I am pushing me, I am pushing him [Pickford].
“If I can put performances in like that a little bit more when I get the chance, I think I will be pushing him all the way.
“The challenge is amazing and trying to put in performances like that whenever I play will only push Jordan. I was happy with a few saves and the clean sheet.”
Hungary team news
Rossi is unlikely to change too much from the side that beat England earlier this month, so his front three is expected to be Roland Sallai, match-winner Dominik Szoboszlai and veteran Adam Szalai. Zsolt Nagy netted against Germany last time out so he will likely retain his starting berth on the left, while Willi Orban and Attila Szalai are set to marshal Rossi’s back-three alongside Adam Lang.
Scoreline prediction: England 2-0 Hungary
