When is the Champions League last 16 draw and who has qualified?

Published: 1:10, 13 December 2021

The 2021/22 Champions League group stage is over and we now know all of the teams that will take part in the last 16.

Premier League side Chelsea are the defending champions having beaten Manchester City 1-0 in the final last season thanks to Kai Havertz’s first-half goal. The Blues were placed in a group alongside Juventus, Zenit and Malmo, with many tipping them to go far and they have secured their spot in the last 16. However, they had to make do with second place, finishing behind Juventus after a chaotic final day.

Man City’s quest to go one better than last season saw them put in a pretty tough group alongside Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, with the former also searching for a first Champions League victory. But they cruised to top their group ahead of PSG, who have also qualified.

Liverpool and Manchester United were also given tough groups, with Jurgen Klopp’s side facing Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan, while the Red Devils were drawn against Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys. Yet, like Man City, they have both won their groups and are safe in the knowledge that they will be top seeds in the draw.

Elsewhere, Barcelona have been knocked out, finishing behind Bayern Munich and Benfica in Group E, while Real Madrid and Inter Milan qualified in Group D ahead of competition new boys Sheriff, and Shakhtar Donetsk.

But only half of the 32 teams have put their names in the hat for the last 16.

When is the 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw?

The 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw will take place place shortly after the group stage is complete. But while some may still have Fridays as the day for the draw in their mind, that is not the case.

The 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw is scheduled to take place on Monday 13 December 2021, with a start time of 11am GMT. As always, the draw will be hosted by the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

Once the draw is made, the last 16 is scheduled for dates in February and March, with first legs and second legs taking place across two weeks.

The first legs are set for 15/16 and 22/23 February 2022, with the return legs planned for 8/9 and 15/16 March 2022.

How will the 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw work?

As always there are still rules, regulations and limitations for the 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw.

The qualified 16 teams will be split into two pots, one consisting of the eight group winners (seeded) and the other of the runners-up (unseeded).

No team can be drawn against a club from their group or their own association so, as an example, no English club will be able to play each other in the last 16 regardless of where they finish.

The seeded sides (group winners) will also play as the away side in the last 16 first leg before returning home for the second match. However, bear in mind that the away goals rule was scrapped ahead of the 2021/22 Champions League campaign.
