Poland and Wales get their respective Nations League campaigns underway when they converge on Wroclaw later this week in Group A4. Rob Page will likely have his mind on Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against either Scotland or Ukraine, but he will know the importance of making a strong start to the Nations League.

In a difficult League A group alongside the Netherlands and Belgium, Poland and Wales will probably see this match as a potential six-pointer, placing a huge emphasis on getting a result and making a tangible impression on the table in these early stages.

Poland play their first international match after confirming their place in this year’s World Cup, beating Sweden 2-0 back in March, while Wales face an anxious wait to see if they will be making an appearance at the quadrennial competition. This will be Wales’ first appearance in League A after winning Group B4 in last year’s Nations League.

Poland vs Wales match stats

Robert Lewandowski had more shots on target than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues across 2021/22 (81), so expect the prolific Pole to pepper to Wales’ net. He was the only player to register over 70 shots on target, with Kylian Mbappe (67) and Mohamed Salah (60) the only other two go register 60+, showing just how much the Bayern Munich marksman unleashed on Bundesliga goalkeepers in 2021/22. For Wales, they may see Kieffer Moore as their best option in front of goal beyond the usual suspect in Gareth Bale. The 6ft 5in forward has scored three headed goals for Wales across his international career. Only Aleksandar Mitrovic (12) has scored more headed goals than Moore (9) over the past two seasons in the Championship.

It’s been over a decade since these nations last met. You’d have to go back to 2009 to see John Toshack’s men lost 1-0 to Leo Beenhakker’s Poland. Brazil-born Roger Guerreiro got the job done that day for The Eagles.
