Although five places separate these two sides, this game could have a big say in who finishes in the top four of the Premier League this season. For Liverpool, defeat could all but end their hopes. The Reds are currently ninth, nine points outside the top four but they do have a game in hand on most of the teams above them.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had started to lift themselves up the table either side of the World Cup following a poor start but 2023 wasn’t kind to them. The Reds lost three of their first four league games of the year, beaten by Brighton, Brentford and Wolves alongside a draw with Chelsea. But they ended their winless run last time out, beating rivals Everton in the Merseyside Derby.
Newcastle, meanwhile, remain a formidable opponent in the Premier League but are going through something of a rough patch. The Magpies have lost just once this season (to Liverpool in controversial fashion back in August) and are on a 17-game unbeaten run in the Premier League since that defeat.
However, since returning from the World Cup, Newcastle have won just two of their seven Premier League matches with five draws. They go into this game on a run of three consecutive draws, held by Crystal Palace, West Ham and Bournemouth, which leaves them just two points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham albeit with a game in hand.

Newcastle vs Liverpool match stats
Mohamed Salah found the net against Everton last time out and he’ll be hoping to make it two in two against a team he generally enjoys playing. The Egyptian has six goals in his last 10 Premier League games against Newcastle, and is just two off equalling Robbie Fowler’s Liverpool record of 128 goals in the competition.
However, looking to keep Salah out will be Nick Pope. The Newcastle goalkeeper has been fantastic this season, keeping the most clean sheets in the league and conceding just 13 goals, with 54 saves including four against Liverpool at Anfield.
