Depending on who you ask, it all boils down to this in the Premier League. With eight games left to play in the season, the two Premier League title challengers meet when Man City host Liverpool on Sunday. Defending champions Man City go into this game with the slight upper hand, one point clear of second-placed Liverpool but that will not stop them going for the win.
Man City were once comfortable atop the table but their recent run is what has allowed Liverpool to catch up. Pep Guardiola’s side have dropped points in two of their past five Premier League matches, first losing to Tottenham Hotspur at home before drawing with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. They will also have an eye on next week’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
However, Liverpool won’t have caught up to Man City if it weren’t for their excellent form in the Premier League. The Reds have won their past 10 matches, conceding just two goals and keeping eight clean sheets.
Liverpool also had the ability to rest players in the latter stages of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Benfica, which they won 3-1. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were both brought off to rest, and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen believes Klopp’s changes were indicative of who might play this weekend.
“The way Jurgen Klopp managed his substitutions would suggest maybe not (on Luis Diaz starting),” Owen said on BT Sport.
“Bringing Mohamed Salah off, bringing Sadio Mane off, you would think (Diogo) Jota would have to play – he has been playing very well and he didn’t start today.”

Man City vs Liverpool: Match Stats
There will be a lot of stars on show at the Etihad this weekend but Phil Foden is the one to keep an eye on. Foden absolutely loves playing Liverpool, starting three games against the Reds, winning two with an aggregate score of 10-3. Foden has also never failed to score against Liverpool in his starts, only managing more goals in his career vs Brighton (four).
But of course Man City will have to keep Mohamed Salah quiet. The Egyptian is the Premier League’s top goalscorer this season and has a good return against Man City in the top flight. In nine matches against Man City, Salah has scored five goals, including three in his past three.
