If any of Manchester City’s players struggled under the weight of their close title battle with Arsenal, they didn’t show it at the weekend. Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off away at Fulham felt, at times, more like a Sunday morning stroll in the park, with Pep Guardiola’s men outshooting their hosts 16-1, generating a massive 3.25 Expected Goals compared to just 0.12 from Fulham. A 4-0 defeat arguably flattered the Cottagers.
City have their title destiny in their own hands and know two more wins will see them over the line, regardless of what Arsenal do. Guardiola is thankful for that but also pleased to see his players handle the pressure. They’ve actively thrived on it, having won their last seven Premier League matches.
“Since they (Arsenal) lost against Aston Villa the destiny is in our hands,” Guardiola said in his post-match press conference. “In the last game (of the season) against West Ham the destiny is in our hands and that is what we want. It will be difficult but we are ready for the challenge.
“My players like to play with pressure, they are used to it. The players enjoy this feeling. This season is the same, don’t think about anything other than the next game. Focus on winning the next game and then we will see what happens. We go to London and try to win.”
