Aston Villa to win to nil (2/1 with Betfair)
Aston Villa have won each of their last five competitive matches with just one goal conceded, while Southampton are on a six-game losing streak across all competitions with only three goals scored. Villa have also won their last four matches against Southampton without conceding a goal. The odds are stacked agains the Saints and, with Villa being in such good form, this looks like a bet that could represent great value.
Over 4 cards in the match (7/4 with Bet365)
Southampton are second only to Arsenal (5) for red cards in the Premier League this season (3), while the Saints are second for yellow cards (75), only behind Chelsea (79). Southampton vs Aston Villa Odds
How both teams go into Southampton vs Aston Villa
Southampton know they are down now, but they certainly won’t want their side to set any unfavourable records. Saints are rock-bottom with just two wins and ten points from 31 games, scoring just 23 goals and conceding 74 along the way. That includes a miserable run of 11 defeats in their last 12 and five in a row before the international break. They need to find another point to equal Derby’s record for lowest points total in the Premier League (11) and they’ll be keen to do that as soon as possible to avoid the indignity of being known as the worst Premier League side on record.
A recent point against Crystal Palace ended a run of five losses in a row but Southampton were unable to capitalise on that draw, losing to Tottenham last weekend and seeing their relegation confirmed. With nothing to play for but pride, Southampton will be looking to end the season on a high and, with the pressure off, they could find some results in the closing weeks of the season.
By contrast, life couldn’t be much better if you’re an Aston Villa fan. Unai Emery’s men cruised past Preston to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals and are in the quarter finals of the Champions League. What’s more, the Villains bounced back from a heavy 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace with three consecutive wins moving them up to seventh and leaving them just two points away from a top four place.
The first leg of their Champions League tie against PSG could’ve gone better, with the Midlands side falling to a 3-1 defeat but they remain in the tie, With the second leg taking place in midweek, Aston Villa could have one eye on the second leg encounter and this could give Southampton the chance to sneak something from this match.
Southampton team news
The likes of Will Smallbone, Ryan Fraser, Ross Stewart and Taylor Harwood-Bellis should all be back in action for Southampton by the time this game comes around.
Aston Villa team news
Aston Villa could have a fully fit squad for this match, although they have three fixtures beforehand — including a trip to Paris — so plenty could change.
Southampton vs Aston Villa head-to-head
Aston Villa have won their last four matches against Southampton without conceding a goal, with the last three ending 1-0.
