Man Utd got their 2023/24 Premier League campaign off to a winning start but it was a tough victory, needing Raphael Varane to step in with 15 minutes left to play to secure the 1-0 victory over Wolves. Goals were proving to be an issue for Man Utd, who didn’t have a recognised striker to call upon, with Anthony Martial only fit for the bench and Rasmus Hojlund not in the squad at all. Goals have continued to be an issue since, with the Red Devils falling 2-0 away at Spurs in their second match — a woefully underwhelming performance.

They will be glad to back at home however, as Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 30 games at Old Trafford (W26 D4). It is their longest home unbeaten run since a 40-game stretch between September 2016 and December 2017 and Erik ten Hag’s joint longest home run without defeat  in his managerial career (also 30 between Oct 2017 – Feb 2019 with Utrecht and Ajax).

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, were on the end of yet another away defeat in the Premier League as they opened with a 2-1 loss to Arsenal. Arsenal took a 2-0 lead in at half-time and it took Forest until late on, when Anthony Elanga came on, to ask serious questions of the Gunners’ defence. But in the end it came too little too late and Taiwo Awoniyi’s strike proved to be just a consolation. Steve Cooper’s side have now won just one of their 20 away matches since returning to the Premier League last season, with their 14 defeats the joint-most of any side in the division in that time. Luckily, Forest are pretty good at home and, indeed, they rallied to beat newly-promoted Sheffield United 2-1 in dramatic fashion.

Man Utd vs Nottingham Forest match tip

Man Utd to win and BTTS No @ 23/20 with Copybet

After over 20 years without a fixture, Man Utd and Nottingham Forest met four times across all competitions last season and to say it was a one-sided affair would be an understatement. The Red Devils not only won all four games, home and away in the Premier League and in both legs of the EFL Cup semi-final, but they also kept four clean sheets.

Man Utd vs Nottingham Forest Bet-Builder tip

Under 2.5 goals > Marcus Rashford to score anytime > Man Utd to win

Across the four games last season there were a handful of goalscorers for Man Utd, but a few did net more than once. While Fred has left Old Trafford and Anthony Martial is not guaranteed to start amid doubts surrounding his own future, Marcus Rashford is best placed to add to his two goals against Nottingham Forest.

However, Man Utd showed some wastefulness in front of goal in their Premier League opener against Wolves, while Forest restricted Arsenal in their first game.

In  Out Doubtful
Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, Rasmus Hojlund, Tom Heaton, Mason Mount Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire

Rasmus Hojlund isn’t expected back until next month, while Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo are longer-term injuries. They’re joined by Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, who are both doubts at CB and Mason Mount, with the new arrival from Chelsea expected to miss up to six weeks.

This will force Erik ten Hag into changing a midfield three that has yet to gel so far this season, with Christian Eriksen expected to get the nod alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. Casemiro himself has faced criticism from the media after a poor start to the season but ten Hag has been quick to defend the Brazilian.

“You always have to analyse clinically and that assessment is not right,” he said.

“It was about the back and the front, not about the midfield. That is why we were open. Nothing to do with the midfield. I said that straight after the game.”

The Dutchman was also quick to play down the rumours of the Brazilian not being fit enough.

“Oh, if you see the numbers, you see he’s fully fit! “I have no doubts [about our fitness]. They can do it. After 35 minutes against Spurs, they didn’t do it anymore but after the first game we were first across the rank of fitness.”

In  Out Doubtful
Gonzalo Montiel, Andrey Santos None  Wayne Hennessey, Felipe, Ola Aina

Nottingham Forest have had some good news and good luck with injuries recently, with Wayne Hennessey and Felipe btoh expected back from their respective issues before the end of the month. Even if this game is too soon, it won’t be long. Ola Aina is a doubt, but should feature in the squad in some capacity.

Brazilian Andrey Santos has joined on-loan from Chelsea and should go straight into the squad alongside fellow new boy Gonzalo Montiel, who also joined this week on a temporary basis from Sevilla.

This has been a very one-sided fixture of late, with Man Utd winning their past 10 games against Nottingham Forest, scoring 36 goals while conceding three. Nottingham Forest’s last success in this fixture came in the 1994/95 season when they won at Old Trafford and then held the Red Devils at home at the end of what had been a good period in the league.
