How both teams go into Man City vs Real Madrid

Pep Guardiola’s men entered the final matchday of the Champions League group stage fully aware of their situation. A victory over Club Brugge would secure their spot in the knockout phase, a feat that once seemed unlikely before the tournament began, as many considered Manchester City one of the top eight ranked teams. The current English champions were trailing 1-0 at halftime but mounted a comeback in the second half to win 3-1. This match reflected their overall campaign: out of eight fixtures, City managed three wins, all against teams that finished well below them in the rankings—35th (Slovan Bratislava), 31st (Sparta Prague), and 24th (Club Brugge). However, they lost to two teams ranked higher (PSG and Juventus) and one ranked just below them (Sporting Portugal), while also drawing against another team that finished above them (Feyenoord).

City’s descent was not as dire as that of European Cup holders Real Madrid, who finished 11th, just one point away from automatic qualification for the quarter-finals. Los Blancos managed to secure three consecutive wins, including a 3-0 victory against Brest in their last match. However, their title defence got off to a shocking start, as they suffered three defeats in their first four games. Two of those losses were against Lille and Liverpool, both of whom progressed safely into the final eight. AC Milan, who are currently in the playoffs, ended up level on points with Real Madrid and also defeated Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Remarkably, Madrid finished the league phase with only one clean sheet across their eight matches.
