How both teams go into Finland vs Republic of Ireland
This is a clash between two nations looking for their first points of this Nations League campaign and, in all likelihood, it’ll be a key meeting in the battle to avoid relegation to Group C.
Finland opened their campaign with a 3-0 defeat away to Greece before a spirited but fruitless 2-0 loss at Wembley against England, falling to a Harry Kane brace in the Bayern Munich striker’s 100th international appearance. However, they now have home advantage for two matches and will look to make that count, especially in this first match.
The Republic of Ireland, meanwhile, lost both their opening games 2-0 on home soil, including against England when they were put to the sword by two players of Irish descent in Declan Rice and Jack Grealish. Now, they face two away matches against Finland and Greece after which they cannot afford to remain on zero points if they want to avoid relegation.

Finland vs Republic of Ireland head-to-head
Republic of Ireland hold a 3-2 advantage in the head-to-head stakes, with the nations sharing two draws. However, both of Finland’s victories have come in the last two meetings, both by a 1-0 scoreline during the 2020/21 Nations League. That means Ireland haven’t won in this fixture since August 2002, when a side featuring the likes of Robbie Keane, Shay Given, Lee Carsley and Damien Duff delivered a 3-0 friendly win in Helsinki.
