How both teams go into England vs Latvia

The Thomas Tuchel era at Wembley gets underway in March, with this being the second outing. England will hope to have got off to the perfect start, then using this game to take further control of World Cup qualifying. England are the top seed of their group, placed alongside Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra. And they haven’t lost a game in World Cup qualifying since October 2009, a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine. The Three Lions are unbeaten in 31 games since, winning 23.

Latvia are yet to qualify for the World Cup, so they’ll be hoping they can change that this time around. But, despite the expanded tournament, each Uefa qualifying group still only has one automatic spot and a second for the play-offs. And Latvia aren’t in good form. They head into World Cup qualifying off the back of a poor Uefa Nations League campaign, which saw them finish bottom of their League C group — they’ll face a relegation play-off next year.

England team news

There will be some changes from Lee Carsley’s final England squad due to injuries. Lewis Hall is out for the season, while Noni Madueke is also injured. Bukayo Saka won’t return from injury in time, and Trent Alexander-Arnold will also be a doubt having picked up a knock in Liverpool‘s recent Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Latvia team news

Paolo Nicolato will be hoping to rely on a full-strength squad for this international break. A lot of Latvia’s most recent squad play their football in their native country, but Daniels Balodis and Kristers Tobers currently ply their trade in Scotland.
