The 2026-27 League One season begins on Saturday, and our Reading vs Luton Town predictions cover the pick of the opening games. Kick-off at the Select Car Leasing Stadium is 12.30pm.
It is one of just three lunchtime starts on 15 August before the rest of the division gets going, and Sky Sports+ are showing this one live. Moreover, both clubs expect to be in the promotion picture come May, so there is an early edge to it.
Reading did the league double over Luton last season, winning 3-2 both home and away. However, Jack Wilshere’s side start the new campaign among the favourites to go up after missing the play-offs by a single point.
Below you will find Anthony Eadson’s best bets, a form guide, the head-to-head record and a score prediction. For more selections across the EFL, visit our football tips hub.

|---|---|---|
| Lewis Wing Anytime Assist | 15/2 (with Ladbrokes) | At 15/2, we cannot ignore the price on show with Ladbrokes for Lewis Wing to provide an assist. The 31-year-old turned provider on 11 occasions last season, giving bags of appeal to the 15/2 that only implies an 11.8% chance of success. We’d have this closer to the 5/1. |
| Lewis Wing to score anytime | 6/1 (with Virgin Bet) | Lewis Wing was one of Reading’s standout performers last season with 11 goals and 11 assists. In home matches in 2025/26, he averaged 1.9 shots per game and can find the net on the opening day of the campaign. |

How Reading go into the game
Reading finished 12th in League One last season on 63 points, having won 16, drawn 15 and lost 15 of their 46 games. A play-off push was alive deep into spring, but their form fell away in the closing weeks.
Scoring was rarely the problem, in fairness. Jack Marriott carried the attack with 16 league goals, Lewis Wing added 11 from midfield, and the Royals hit 64 in total. Conceding 60 at the other end is what Leam Richardson has to fix.
Richardson has kept the spine of his squad together over the summer, and home form will decide whether Reading can turn draws into wins this time. After all, 15 of them last season cost as many points as any defeat.
How Luton Town go into the game
Luton Town finished seventh on 74 points, one agonising point short of the play-off places. They won 21 and lost 14 of their 46 games, and their 56 goals conceded was among the better defensive records in the division.
There was still silverware in Jack Wilshere’s first season in charge, however, as the Hatters won the Vertu Trophy. Jordan Clark top-scored with 12 league goals, while Gideon Kodua chipped in with nine.
Wilshere has welcomed the early start, and he has experienced forward options in Jerry Yates and Nahki Wells. Meanwhile, the motivation is obvious: Luton lost both league meetings with Reading last season and want that record put right.
