Bolton Wanderers vs Preston North End opens the Championship’s Saturday programme at the Toughsheet Community Stadium (12.30pm UK time), with the newly promoted hosts fancied to mark their return to the second tier with a win.
Bolton are back in the Championship after climbing out of League One, and they welcome a Preston side who have made a habit of getting the better of them. Andy Francis breaks down the best bets below, along with our score prediction and the head-to-head record.
Premium Tips
Andy Francis expects goals on Bolton’s big day but not necessarily for the home side.
| Premium Tip | Odds | Why we’re backing it |
|---|---|---|
| Preston To Win and Over 1.5 Match Goals | 3/1 | Preston to win and over 1.5 match goals is a value-led rather than a low-risk play at Bolton. North End are clear away outsiders so a Preston victory sees reasonable value. The goals leg is deliberately conservative: it needs only two goals, while the 2.5-goal line is close to even money. Preston’s sold-out allocation, with more than 4,400 travelling supporters expected, should help create a committed away performance . However, it is Bolton’s home match and the Championship opener, so neither side has current league form. Stake modestly and treat the selection as a calculated risk. |
| Preston To Be Winning At HT, Bolton Exactly 0 Match Goals | 15/2 | This is a high-variance, price-dependent punt rather than a strong standalone play. Preston have scored in four of their last five outings, so an early away goal is plausible, while Bolton failed to score in two of their most recent five matches. However, the clean-sheet leg is demanding: Bolton scored 70 goals in 2025/26, averaging 1.52 per game, and recorded a 13-8-2 home league record. Bolton also beat Preston 2-0 at this ground in last summer’s friendly. With the hosts favoured in the win market, only take Preston to lead at half-time and Bolton to score zero if the price represents real value for the low likelihood of that exact scenario. |

How Bolton Wanderers go into the game
Bolton return to the Championship after a strong League One campaign that ended in promotion, finishing fifth on 75 points with 70 goals scored. Momentum is with them, and a lively forward unit featuring Sam Dalby, Ryan Hardie and John McAtee gives the hosts plenty going forward.
The step up in class is significant and keeping things tight at the back will be the priority against sharper opposition. But on opening day, roared on by a full house, Bolton have every reason to start on the front foot.
How Preston North End go into the game
Preston were a steady presence in mid-table last season, finishing 14th on 60 points. They were rarely spectacular but proved awkward to beat, and they travel with an excellent recent record against Bolton, unbeaten in the last four meetings.
Milutin Osmajic leads the line with Callum Lang and Delano Burgzorg offering pace in support. It is a tricky opening trip, but Preston have the know-how to unsettle a newly promoted side still finding its feet back at this level.
