Wrexham arrive unbeaten this summer and with two Premier League scalps already banked. Phil Parkinson’s side beat Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki on 18th July before edging Leeds United 3-2 in Tampa. How both teams head into Liverpool vs Wrexham
Liverpool
This is a summer of change on Merseyside. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last season with no silverware, a year after winning the title, and Arne Slot paid for that decline with his job. Iraola has taken over after three years at Bournemouth, where he guided the Cherries to sixth and into Europe for the first time in their history.
His first match in charge brought a 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville. Nineteen-year-old Kieran Morrison opened the scoring early, but the Black Cats turned the game around after the interval by exploiting the space in front of Liverpool’s teenage centre-halves. Dominik Szoboszlai, captaining the side after coming on at half-time, levelled with a superb half-volley before Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas completed the turnaround.
The nature of that comeback will please Iraola, particularly the performances of Morrison and Koumas with the club still hunting attacking reinforcements. Isak, Wirtz and Gravenberch have now joined the tour, although all three need time to reach match fitness and may be limited to substitute appearances.
The concern is at the back. Liverpool have a lengthy injury list among their senior defenders and conceded twice against Sunderland from positions they would normally control. Wrexham will have noted that vulnerability.
Wrexham
The Red Dragons have arrived in the United States as the story of pre-season. Parkinson’s side beat Manchester United 1-0 at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on 18th July, with Sam Smith scoring the only goal. A week later they beat Leeds 3-2 in Tampa, taking the lead three times through Kieffer Moore, Bailey Cadamarteri and Smith, whose late finish settled it.
Smith has now scored in consecutive friendlies against Premier League clubs, while Moore needed just 32 seconds to open his account against Leeds. Cadamarteri’s first goal for the club added to a promising evening. The Red Dragons are unbeaten this summer with two wins and a draw.
Last season brought the highest league finish in the club’s history. Wrexham collected 71 points from 46 Championship matches to finish seventh, narrowly missing the play-offs, and they scored 69 goals while conceding 65. They are among the promotion favourites for 2026/27 despite being the only Championship club yet to make a summer signing.
Liverpool vs Wrexham team news
Liverpool remain without long-term absentees Hugo Ekitike (Achilles), Wataru Endo (ankle), Conor Bradley (knee) and Giovanni Leoni (knee). Gomez is unlikely to feature after picking up an injury against Sunderland, while Jeremy Jacquet is set to be rested.
That should mean starts for youngsters Ndukwe and Ndiaye at the heart of the defence, flanked by Milos Kerkez and Calvin Ramsay, who picked up an assist in Nashville. Isak, Wirtz and Gravenberch are all available but are unlikely to start given their limited pre-season work.
Trey Nyoni could partner Curtis Jones at the base of midfield, with Szoboszlai in a No.10 role behind Koumas.
Wrexham have no fresh injury concerns. Moore is expected to lead the line again after his goal against Leeds, supported by Cadamarteri and Nathan Broadhead.
Zak Vyner, Dominic Hyam and Lewis Brunt should form a back three in front of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Liverpool vs Wrexham head-to-head
These clubs have met 19 times in all matches, with Liverpool winning 11, drawing two and losing six. Many of those meetings came in wartime regional football in the 1940s, including an 8-0 Liverpool win in September 1943.
The last competitive fixture between the two was a League Cup tie in January 1978, which Liverpool won 3-1 at the Racecourse Ground. The only modern meetings have been friendlies in 2006 and 2007, both won by the Reds.

Liverpool vs Wrexham prediction
Wrexham deserve enormous credit for the way they have handled this tour, but the gap in resources should tell in New York. Liverpool’s returning internationals give Iraola options he did not have against Sunderland, and the Reds will want a sharper defensive display before the Premier League season begins.
However, this is still pre-season. Liverpool’s back line is young and short of senior cover, and Wrexham carry a genuine physical threat in Moore alongside a striker in Smith who keeps finding the net against top-flight defences. Both of these teams have played in high-scoring games this month, and neither will set up to protect a scoreline.
We expect Liverpool to win, and we expect goals. The Reds should have too much quality across 90 minutes, while Wrexham look likely to take something from a defence that has already shown gaps this summer.
