Germany cruised to three points in their opening game against Curacao, although they did suffer a first-half scare against the Concacaf minnows.
Julian Nagelsmann’s men got off to a flying start with Felix Nmecha fired home a smart first-time finish to cap off a fine team move and put Germany in the lead.
But Curacao had their moment. In the 20th minute, Livano Comenencia was able to pounce on a loose ball in the box after a Nico Schlotterbeck tackle to blast in a famous equaliser – the tiny island nation’s first at a World Cup and against a nation with four World Cup wins no less.
The Blue Wave had some chances after that, but eventually die Mannschaft were able to wrestle back the initiative and the lead. Schlotterbeck found some space in the box to glance home a Nathaniel Brown corner.
The third came just before half-time. Kai Havertz converted coolly from the penalty spot after Nmecha was brought down in the box.
Die Mannschaft began the second half in even quicker fashion than the first when Jamal Musiala produced a delightful finish after racing onto a through-ball from Johus Kimmich and Brown was the man to make it five when he volleyed in his first international goal from the edge of the box.
Deniz Undav swept home from seven yards despite the best efforts of Leandro Bacuna on the line to make it six and Kai Havertz added his second for the final cherry on the cake.
