United States made a superb start to their home World Cup with a statement 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles.
Folarin Balogun netted twice during a scintillating first-half display for the Stars and Stripes, who equalled their biggest win at the finals and scored four goals in a single match for the first time.
The co-hosts hit the front after just seven minutes, when Weston McKennie’s square pass was turned into his own net by Damian Bobadilla.
Moments after the offside flag thwarted Balogun, the forward was not to be denied in the 31st minute, tucking away a first-time finish from Christian Pulisic’s cutback.
Balogun doubled his tally in first-half stoppage time, getting away from Omar Alderete and Gustavo Gomez, before brilliantly bending into the top corner.
Paraguay gave themselves hope 17 minutes from time when Miguel Almiron and Julio Enciso combined to tee up Maurico for a neat finish.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side had the last word with the final action of the game, as substitute Giovanni Reyna rounded off a 26-pass move by beating Orlando Gill with a delightful outside-of-the-boot finish.
