Germany World Cup 2026 squad: 26-man squad named by Die Mannschaft in bid for fifth title

Germany have named their 26-man squad in preparation for the 2026 World Cup as they look to equal Brazil’s record of five world titles.

Julian Nagelsmann has named the players he believe can lead Germany to glory this summer and there are a host of world class talents that will be boarding the plane to North America.

With such riches available to the German national side it’s no surprise to see that many of the player will be household names. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz, Pascal Gross of Brighton and Hove Albion and Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw of Newcastle United are the representatives in the squad from English clubs.

Julian Nagelsmann has named a strong squad for the World Cup, with a wealth of talent available to him from across the biggest leagues in Europe. The defence will be marshalled by Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rudiger but perhaps the biggest news is that Manuel Neuer is back in the fold at the age of 40 after making his last appearance for his nation after retiring from international football after Euro 2024.

Gone are the days of Miroslav Klose leading the line for Germany, and they do look a little light up front, with just three players selected and only eight goals between the three of them in 24 caps. The likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz will need to step up from a little deeper to pick up the slack.

Three players to look out for this summer

Nick Woltemade (Newcastle United)

Nick Woltemade has emerged as Germany’s wildcard for the 2026 World Cup, offering a unique profile to their frontline. Standing at nearly two metres tall, the Newcastle United forward combines imposing physicality with technical grace, a rarity that allows Germany to vary their approach. Having transitioned successfully to the Premier League, Woltemade provides an aerial threat and holdup play that complements Germany’s creative midfielders. We expect his presence to be vital in breaking down low blocks, offering a focal point that has been missing in recent years. His impact this summer could redefine the traditional German number nine role.

Florian Wirtz (Liverpool)

Florian Wirtz is the creative linchpin Germany will look to for inspiration at the 2026 World Cup. His exceptional vision and ability to operate in tight spaces make him the primary architect of the DFB-Team’s attacking play. Wirtz possesses a rare knack for finding the final pass, a quality that will be essential in unlocking the tournament’s most organised defences. We believe his partnership with Jamal Musiala will be the defining feature of Germany’s campaign, providing a level of flair and unpredictability that few sides can match. His impact this summer will be pivotal to Germany’s pursuit of global glory.

Assan Ouedraogo (RB Leipzig)

Lennart Karl was meant to be the German wonderkid at the World Cup. But he sadly picked up an injury in a pre-tournament friendly and will miss the World Cup. Assan Ouedraogo has been drafted into the squad to replace him, and this could be a good chance for him to show what he can do. The 20-year-old is a bit of a deeper midfielder, without being defensive, but comes into the World Cup off the back of a decent season with RB Leipzig. Ouedraogo has also scored on his only appearance for Germany so far.
