Jack Rudoni has been in and out of the Coventry City line-ups this campaign, but has taken them to another level recently.
The best player on the best team this season in the Championship has barely had a decent run of games. But when he has, it’s been crucial to get the Sky Blues over the hump. Not only that, but it has all but guaranteed them in the Premier League next season.
Coventry’s No.5 has had his fair share of injuries during the current campaign. He has missed a grand total of 14 matches, with calf issues being the most common problem he’s faced.

They took him out of action for nine straight games between September and November. More recently, a further four-match absence in March.
But it hasn’t mattered too much. Every time he steps back into team selection, whether it’s as a starter or off the bench, he makes a difference.
How has Jack Rudoni made the difference for Coventry City?
Mid-season turnaround
Rudoni ended the 2024-25 season on a high, as Coventry’s best and most impactful player. His performances under Frank Lampard made Sky Blues fans excited for the campaign ahead.
But he struggled in the beginning of 2025-26 – which was the only run he’s had fully fit as a starter. The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes in each of the first five games of the season, but only managed to score and assist in the 7-1 thrashing of Queens Park Rangers (2G 1A).
Then the injury came and started to halter his progress. That QPR match was the only one of his first 16 games in which he managed to score or set up a goal.
But something changed immediately after that. Since New Year’s Day, he has made 10 apperances and managed to score or assist in a whopping eight of them.
| Opponent | Goals | Assists | G+A |
|---|---|---|---|
| Derby County (H) | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Stoke City (H) | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Sheffield United (A) | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| West Brom (A) | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Middlesbrough (H) | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Oxford (H) | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| QPR (A) | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Millwall (H) | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Leicester (H) | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Birminham (A) | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Total | 5 | 4 | 9 |
He has picked up a goal involvement in each of his last five games. Only four players have managed to string together more games scoring and/or assisting in the Championship this season.

He has also scored in each of his last four, while only Whittaker (6) and Azaz (5) have gone on longer goalscoring runs this campaign.
Timely contributions
You may have figured from the table a few paragraphs above. But Rudoni has come in clutch for Coventry in a decisive stretch of the season.
It’s now five straight games in which the No.5 has either scored or assisted. Granted, they have come across the last month and a half, but it doesn’t make it less impressive.

In fact, it has coincided with the Sky Blues retaking control of the league. This run started precisely in the Middlesbrough game. For context, Boro had just stolen first place from Coventry before going to the CBS Arena.
Frank Lampard’s men then ended what was a three-game winless streak with a dominant 3-1 win. It also kick-started the downfall of ‘Hellball’, as Kim Hellberg has seen since his side pick up just two wins from their following eight matches.
Not only has Rudoni been crucial to Coventry in terms of season timing, but also in-game. Of his five goal contributions in this span, four put the Sky Blues ahead in the score.
Among them are his Good Friday brace against Derby County, two winners against Stoke City (on stoppage time) and Sheffield United, and the assist that put them 1-0 up in the first-vs-second match-up against Boro.
The exception was his goal at the Hawthorns that sealed a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
Rudoni’s 34 goal involvements since the start of last season are the second most by a player in the Championship. Only Finn Azaz (39) has managed more. Of the top-four in this regard, the other three have played more games than the Sky Blues attacking-midfielder (73).
Signing him was a great bit of business by Coventry. He had already shown talent at Huddersfield Town, but truly excelled at the CBS.
His ability to create but also attack the box, while shifting from one side to the other is key for Lampard’s tactics. He looked tailor-made for what the former midfielder wanted to achieve. And despite missing out on a few moments, it seems like he will get to taste Premier League football for the first time in his career.
