Chelsea vs PSG stats and analysis: Tough night for Liam Rosenior as PSG give them the Blues

Paris Saint-Germain inflicted Chelsea’s worst-ever Champions League defeat across two legs, beating the Blues 8-2 on aggregate.

Luis Enrique’s side are the European champions and will continue the defence of their crown into the quarter-finals.

Chelsea, meanwhile, saw their return to the Champions League end in humiliation. And they have a tough fight on their hands to qualify for next season’s competition.

Rosenior’s naive gameplan

Chelsea came into the game needing to overturn a three-goal deficit. Naturally, in chasing the game, they would leave space for PSG on the counter and concede shots.

But PSG were able to put the game to bed after just six minutes, silencing the Stamford Bridge crowd by making it 6-2 on aggregate.

Chelsea started on the front foot, looking to press PSG man for man inside their own half. The defensive line stepped up to cover space behind the midfield, leaving plenty of room in behind for the pacey PSG frontline to exploit.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia made a run into the channel one-on-one against Mamadou Sarr, who started the game at right-back in the absence of Reece James and Malo Gusto.

The young French defender made a mistake in trying to deal with the ball from the sky, leading to Kvaratskhelia slotting it home. So, the wind was taken out of Chelsea’s sails very early on.

If Rosenior’s side had been caught in transition, throwing extra bodies into the box to attack, it could be forgiven. But another pressing issue and out-of-possession choice costing the Blues any chance of a special comeback is much tougher to excuse.

Clinical PSG

Over the two legs, PSG scored eight goals from just 2.23 Expected Goals. Their three goals at Stamford Bridge were worth a total of 0.45 xG. Four of PSG’s eight goals across the two legs came from outside the box.

Kvaratskhelia was the hero of the tie for PSG. The Georgian came off the bench in the first leg to add two late goals, making it 5-2 on aggregate. He then killed the tie without giving Chelsea a chance to get started at Stamford Bridge, scoring after just six minutes.

Bradley Barcola is another PSG forward who enjoyed the two legged tie over Chelsea. He scored twice with two lovely strikes into the roof of the net.

PSG’s pace in the front line hurt Chelsea in both fixtures. They constantly asked questions of the Blues’ defensive unit, running in behind. And Chelsea did not have the answers.

Dark times for Chelsea

Speaking after the game, stand-in Chelsea captain admitted that his side was outplayed tactically by PSG. But he also said something that will have brought fear into Chelsea fans’ hearts.

Fernandez admitted that he was unsure about his future at Chelsea, after being asked if he would be at the club in 2026-27.

He said: ” I don’t know. There are eight games left, and the FA Cup. There’s the World Cup, and then we’ll see.”

Chelsea have struggled with constant change since the new ownership took over. Numerous managerial changes and a revolving door of young players have made it tough for the Blues to find stability and continuity.

Fernandez is viewed as one of Chelsea’s biggest leaders. And he was one of their biggest signings since the ownership change. But he’s not looking like he might want to jump ship, chasing the highest honours in football.

Other key players such as Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo could easily reassess their futures should Chelsea not qualify for the Champions League next season. Uf they are not convinced in the current direction of the club.

This summer will be very telling for Chelsea. The ownership have made it clear they wanted to build a core group that can grow together to win major competitions. But if multiple players start showing interest in leaving, it will only reinforce the fan sentiment that the club is being run poorly.
