Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea takes centre stage in gameweek seven of the 2025/26 Premier League season, with veteran top-flight referee Anthony Taylor set to take charge of proceedings at Stamford Bridge.
The Reds, reeling from back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, are hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League with a win, but Enzo Maresca’s hosts picked up a confidence-boosting victory over Benfica in midweek. They may fancy their chances against a fragile-looking visiting side, although Maresca has been under some pressure lately with Chelsea sitting eighth in the Premier League standings.
Taylor, who has been a Select Group Referee since 2010, has taken charge of more Liverpool matches than any other Premier League referee, and the Reds, in turn, are Taylor’s most officiated club, with Chelsea joint-second on the same list.

Chelsea have had a bittersweet relationship with Taylor, with the 46-year-old overseeing multiple cup finals involving the Blues.
He dished out five yellow cards as Chelsea beat Tottenham in the 2015 EFL Cup final, but two years later he sent off Victor Moses as they were beaten by Arsenal in the FA Cup showpiece.
Three years later, Chelsea returned to Wembley for another FA Cup final, with Taylor dismissing Mateo Kovacic as Arsenal lifted the trophy yet again.
Despite a respectable winning rate and card count with Taylor in the middle, these crucial red cards have painted him as an unpopular figure within the Blues fanbase, with a petition being launched requesting that the Wythenshawe-born referee not officiate any more matches involving Chelsea.
Taylor’s most recent meeting with Chelsea saw him take charge of their 1-0 win away to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the 2024/25 season.

While Liverpool have enjoyed plenty of success when Taylor has taken charge, one of his most notable appearances resulted in a fine and a one-match ban for then-manager Jurgen Klopp after the German reacted furiously to a penalty appeal being waved away in a 2022/23 meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Taylor most recently refereed Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Bournemouth in the 2025/26 Premier League curtain raiser back in August.
