Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool player ratings: Excellent Eagles end Reds’ perfect start

Crystal Palace moved up to second in the Premier League thanks to their dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool trailed to an early goal from Ismaila Sarr and severely rode their luck in the first half. They were indebted to Alisson for not going into half-time down by a handful of goals.

Although the Reds improved in the second half, an equaliser looked beyond them. But then the inevitable happened, with Federico Chiesa scoring in the 87th minute. Liverpool have now scored six goals in the last 15 minutes of their Premier League matches this season, more than any other side.

The game wasn’t done there, though. Eddie Nketiah came off the bench to win it for Palace deep into injury time, ending Liverpool’s perfect start.

Liverpool player ratings

To say Liverpool started the game slowly would be an understatement. The Reds struggled in the first half and were indebted to Alisson in goal. They fought hard in the second half and finally got the goal most people would have expected. But they couldn’t hold on.

Alisson: 68%

Alisson kept Liverpool in the game in the first half with a handful of saves. With another goalkeeper between the sticks, Liverpool could have been down and out. He made five saves in total, preventing 0.24 goals. But he couldn’t prevent the defeat.

Conor Bradley: 60%

Conor Bradley was involved a lot on the ball for Liverpool, having 69 touches in the first half — the second-most of any Reds player. He completed eight passes into the final third, looking to push Liverpool up the pitch. Defensively, Bradley also made one interception. But he was taken off at half-time as Arne Slot changed tactics.

Ibrahima Konate: 64%

Ibrahima Konate struggled to deal with Mateta in the first half and was booked for a foul on his compatriot. The Liverpool centre-back made two errors leading to shots and was part of a defence that conceded nine shots from inside the box. But he also made two interceptions retaining possession and a whopping 10 clearances. Was taken off with just over 15 minutes left.

Virgil van Dijk: 61%

Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool’s main passer, completing 13 passes into the final third. He also had a retention rate of 91.45%. The Dutchman obviously did his bit defensively too, winning 75% of his ground duels and all of his aerial battles. Van Dijk also made five clearances.

Milos Kerkez: 55%

Milos Kerkez couldn’t really stop the Palace onslaught in the first half, managing just one interception retaining possession. He failed to win a single tackle and only completed one clearance. But he did complete nine passes into the final third and had three touches in the opposition box.

Ryan Gravenberch: 67%

It was unfortunately Ryan Gravenberch’s header from a Palace corner that set up Sarr’s opener. But that was bad luck and cannot be counted against him. The Dutchman made two interceptions retaining possession and won 100% of his duels — both in the air and one the ground.

Alexis Mac Allister: 64%

Looked strong defensively as part of Liverpool’s midfield, though he could have done a little bit better on his passing. Alexis Mac Allister won two possessions in the defensive third and made one clearance, alongside two ball recoveries. He also won an impressive three aerial duels. Replaced after 65 minutes.

Mo Salah: 55%

It was a game to forget for Mo Salah, who only had one shot on target and did very little with his six touches in the opposition box.

Dominik Szoboszlai: 68%

Dominik Szoboszlai started the game as the No.10 but was then moved to right-back for most of the second half. He created four chances and completed six crosses, proving one of Liverpool’s bigger threats. He also made 11 ball recoveries and won 100% of his attempted take-ons.

The German completed an impressive 15 final third passes and created one chance. But he couldn’t help get Liverpool back into the game before his substitution.

Alexander Isak: 51%

Alexander Isak’s first league start for Liverpool was one to forget. The Swede wasn’t really involved in the game, with just 19 touches — the fewest of any starter for either side. He failed to hit the target with any of his three shots and missed two big chances. Isak’s departure as a sub late on was met by ironic cheers from Palace fans.

Cody Gakpo: 62%

Cody Gakpo was brought on at half-time and immediately put on the left wing. He had his moments with five touches in the opposition box and 10 final third passes completed.
