West Ham 0-3 Tottenham player ratings: Lucas Bergvall shines as Spurs win London derby

Tottenham Hotspur took the spoils in the derby at the London Stadium, beating West Ham United 0-3 on Saturday night.

Thomas Frank’s side went into the international break off the back of defeat to Bournemouth, their first in the league under the new boss. But Tottenham were in no danger of losing two games in a row, facing a hapless West Ham.

All three goals came in the second half for Tottenham, with Pape Sarr opening the scoring from a corner. Lucas Bergvall doubled the lead just before the hour mark, and Micky van de Ven completed the scoring shortly after. Just before Bergvall struck, Tomas Soucek saw red for a bad challenge, which only made things harder for West Ham.

West Ham player ratings

West Ham started the game well but eventually fell away, which has been a familiar story for the Hammers this season.

Mads Hermansen: 51%

It was another game to forget for Mads Hermansen in the West Ham goal. He conceded another goal from a set piece and was constantly targeted from corners, with Tottenham knowing his weakness.

Key stats:

  • Goals prevented: -1.14
  • Goals conceded: 3
  • Saves: 2
  • Long passes completed: 4
  • Punched clearances: 2

Kyle Walker-Peters: 56%

Kyle Walker-Peters had a tough night, going up against a Xavi Simons hoping to impress on his debut. He still managed to chip in defensively at times, but it could have been better. Walker-Peters also struggled — alongside the rest of his team — to get West Ham up the pitch into dangerous areas.

Key stats:

  • Tackles won: 2
  • Take-ons completed: 2
  • Clearances: 3
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 4
  • Passes into the final third completed: 4

Konstantinos Mavropanos: 57%

It was an interesting game for Konstantinos Mavropanos, alongside the rest of the West Ham defence. He had his moments where he looked strong. But he also looked weak from set pieces — which is a team-wide problem.

Key stats:

  • Clearances: 7
  • Interceptions retaining possession: 3
  • Aerial duels won: 5
  • Aerial duel success rate: 83.33%
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 2

Maximilian Kilman: 54%

He had a busy night, like his defensive partner. Maximilian Kilman did what he could to try to stop the Tottenham onslaught, especially as they enjoyed a flurry of corners. But the opposition proved to be too much.

Key stats:

  • Aerial duels won: 4
  • Shots blocked: 1
  • Clearances: 8
  • Retention rate: 85.11%
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 3

El Hadji Malick Diouf: 61%

Playing as a full-back rather than a wing-back, El Hadji Malick Diouf had to go up against Mohammed Kudus. And it was a battle that kept him very busy. Although Kudus enjoyed a lot of his time, Diouf still had his moments to flex his defensive muscles.

Key stats:

  • Take-ons completed: 1
  • Tackles won: 1
  • Clearances: 5
  • Shots on target: 1
  • Offside traps successful: 1

Tomas Soucek: 48%

West Ham still had a chance before Tomas Soucek got sent off for a bad tackle 10 minutes into the second half. Although they were already a goal down, this really set them on their way to capitulation. Before that, Soucek didn’t have too much impact aside from winning his aerial battles.

Key stats:

  • Red cards: 1
  • Interceptions retaining possession: 1
  • Aerial duels won: 4
  • Open-play passing accuracy: 72.73%
  • Retention rate: 78.38%

James Ward-Prowse: 56%

James Ward-Prowse had a couple of moments in which he could have pushed West Ham forward, but they never really came to anything. Defensively, he was part of a double pivot that didn’t hold firm. And things only got worse as West Ham went down to 10 men.

  • Accurate forward passes: 8
  • Big chances created: 1
  • Possessions won in the middle third: 0

  • Fouls won in the final third: 1
  • Take-ons completed: 1

Mateus Fernandes: 57%

Mateus Fernandes looked lively and was trying to get on the ball a lot when West Ham had possession. He also looked like he was trying to give away a penalty, such was his constant holding of Van de Ven in the box from corners. Fernandes was another taken off when the system needed a change.

Key stats:

  • Touches in the opposition box: 3
  • Final third passes completed: 8
  • Chances created: 2
  • Tackles won: 2
  • Unsuccessful touches: 2

Crysencio Summerville: 62%

Crysencio Summerville was one of the first West Ham players to be taken off as Graham Potter needed to re-shift the team. He tried to get West Ham forward while he was on the pitch, but was missing that final killer touch.

Key stats:

  • Final third passes completed: 7
  • Take-ons completed: 2
  • High turnovers: 1
  • Tackles won: 1
  • Ball recoveries: 1

Lucas Paqueta: 47%

Lucas Paqueta played more as a centre forward in the first half before moving out wide. Had West Ham’s first shot but dragged it wide. He really should have laid it off to Summerville, who was open and likely to score.

Tottenham player ratings

There were a couple of shaky moments for Tottenham but they generally looked in control of proceedings and well worth their win.

Guglielmo Vicario: 80%

It was a quiet evening for Guglielmo Vicario, but he still had to chip in to keep his clean sheet. The Italian was well-matched for everything West Ham did throw at him, and was confident with the ball at his feet. As every new goalkeeper should be.

Key stats:

  • Saves: 4
  • Goals prevented: 0.47
  • Clean sheets: 1
  • Punched clearances: 1
  • Diving saves: 1

Pedro Porro: 67%

  • Interceptions retaining possession: 1
  • Tackles won: 2
  • Touches in the opposition: 3
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 4

Cristian Romero: 71%

Cristian Romero thought he had given Tottenham the lead in the first half with a good header from a corner. But it was ruled out for a foul. He didn’t let that impact his game, though, helping to keep Tottenham’s defence firm. Romero also chipped in with an assist.

Key stats:

  • Clearances: 2
  • Ground duel success rate: 100%
  • Retention rate: 91.86%
  • Passes into the final third completed: 7
  • Intentional assist: 1

Micky van de Ven: 66%

Micky van de Ven will be making his way home, having to drag Mateus Fernandes along with him. The Dutchman was constantly hassled by the West Ham man from corners, and probably should have won a penalty or two. Defensively he looked good as usual, with a good tackle to stop a promising attack in the second half. He took his goal well, too.

Key stats:

  • Clearances: 4
  • Tackles won: 1
  • Retention rate: 90.32%
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 2
  • Goals: 1

Djed Spence: 57%

Djed Spence defended really well, but he didn’t actually have too much to do. West Ham didn’t have too much luck on his flank, even after changing their team around. So that affected Spence’s score.

Key stats:

  • Take-ons completed: 2
  • Touches in the opposition box: 1
  • Successful passes into the penalty area: 1
  • Passes into the final third completed: 2
  • Possessions won in the defensive third: 1

Lucas Bergvall: 79%

What a game for the youngster. Lucas Bergvall was everywhere for Tottenham as they took control of the game, causing West Ham a lot of problems. And that’s before you take into account his goal and assist. He’s the second youngest player to both score and assist a goal in a Premier League game for Tottenham.

Key stats:

  • Goals: 1
  • Successful passes into the penalty area: 1
  • Duels won: 5
  • Possessions won in the middle third: 3
  • Penalty area entries: 6

Joao Palhinha: 73%

Joao Palhinha continues to exude class in the Tottenham midfield. He’s very much looking like the ex-Fulham midfielder, rather than the man Bayern Munich had. The Portuguese midfielder helped to keep Tottenham in control after a slightly lively start from West Ham.

  • Tackles won: 3
  • Aerial duels won: 3
  • Open-play passing accuracy: 90.48%
  • Accurate forward passes: 6
  • Duels won: 10

Pape Matar Sarr: 68%

Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring for Tottenham shortly after half-time, heading home from a corner. It was a goal that his performance deserved — even if he isn’t marked on goals. The midfielder was excellent again, finding a role in Frank’s team.

Key stats:

  • Possessions won in the middle third: 3
  • Passes into the final third completed: 6
  • Possessions won in the attacking third: 1
  • Duels won: 2

Mohammed Kudus: 63%

You knew when Mohammed Kudus was on the ball, because boos rang around the London Stadium. The Ghanaian was eager to shut the Hammers faithful up on his return to the club, and he did well. Although he wasn’t involved in any goals, Kudus ensured West Ham’s defence had a tough night.

  • Take-ons completed: 3
  • Shots on target: 1
  • Touches in the opposition box: 7
  • Crosses completed: 2
  • Chances created: 2

Mathys Tel: 43%

Key stats:

  • Shots: 1
  • Shots on target: 0
  • Expected goals: 0.01
  • Touches in the opposition box: 3
  • Offsides: 1

Xavi Simons: 66%

Xavi Simons had his bright moments on his Tottenham debut, giving Walker-Peters a busy evening. And it was he who helped kick off the scoring, setting up Sarr with a delivery from a corner. Overall it was a debut to be proud of.

  • Intentional assists: 1
  • Big chances created: 1
  • Take-ons completed: 1

Destiny Udogie: 60%

Came off the bench for the final 20 minutes and looked decent, cementing Tottenham’s defensive stability.

Richarlison: 56%

Didn’t really need to get involved in attack with the game won. But also didn’t make much of an impact.

Wilson Odobert: 56%

Didn’t add too much after coming on, as Tottenham kept their attacking minimal.

Brennan Johnson: 56%

Like Richarlison and Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson didn’t have to do much after coming on.

Kevin Danso: 59%

A late sub to keep the defence solid.
