Liverpool and Atletico Madrid get their Champions League campaigns underway when they face off at Anfield on Wednesday 17th September at 8pm.

The Reds only made it to the last 16 of the Champions League last season — the same round in which Atleti also went out. This game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1.

Liverpool to win and BTTS (11/5 with BetMGM)

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past six home games across all competitions. But they have conceded in four of those matches. It’s been the perfect season for Liverpool, so far, winning all four of their games played and after a rocky start defensively, they seemt o be steadying the ship in their own half. It’s been a less convincing start for Atletico, who have only won one of their four matches to this point, although they have scored in each of their four games.

Antoine Griezmann to score anytime (4/1 with BetMGM)

Antoine Griezmann scored six goals in the Champions League last season, averaging 0.74 per 90 minutes. It capped off a great season for Griezmann, who scored 17 games overall in the 2024/25 season. The Frenchman will be a danger to a Liverpool backline that have looked shaky at times this season and will play in an advanced role, looking to get in behind a Liverpool defence that likes to hold a high line.

How both teams go into Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid

Since reaching the final in 2021-22, Liverpool haven’t had the best time in the Champions League. They’ve suffered two last-16 exits and weren’t in the competition in 2023-24 — reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League instead. Despite their dominance in the Premier League last season, Liverpool only made it to the last 16 in the Champions League. They were excellent in the Champions League group stage, winning seven of their eight games — only losing in the final round of fixtures. But Liverpool were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, losing to the eventual winners on penalties.

Liverpool have started their Premier League campaign with four wins from four. They looked far from convincing against both Bournemouth and Newcastle, but look to have righted things in their last two games, with clean sheets against Arsenal and Burnley. There’s been a reliance on late goals to win them points and they’ll be keen to have more of a stranglehold on the game earlier in the tie.

Atletico Madrid also automatically qualified for the last 16 in 2024-25, before losing on penalties. Their defeat was to bitter rivals Real Madrid, in controversial circumstances. It was the second time in three seasons that Atletico Madrid had failed to reach the quarter-finals — after a group-stage exit in 2022-23.

It’s been a struggle for Atleti in La Liga this season, with the club failing to win any of their first three games, losing to Espanyol before securing draws against Elche and Alaves. They finally picked up their first win of the season at the weekend though, defeating Villarreal 2-0 and Diego Simeone will hope they can build on that victory in this tough trip to Liverpool.

Liverpool team news

Liverpool only have one injury worry ahead of the tie against Atletico Madrid, with Curtis Jones still a couple of weeks away from full fitness.

Atletico Madrid team news

Julian Alvarez, David Hancko and Robin Le Normand were all taken off at the weekend through injury and there are doubts over the trio and whether they will be fit enough for the trip to Anfield.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid head-to-head

Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid home and away when these sides last met in the 2021-22 Champions League group stage. It came after Atletico Madrid knocked Liverpool out in 2019-20. The last four meetings have come in the Champions League, with Liverpool scoring seven times and Atletico scoring six.
