Sunderland will be looking to enter the international break on a positive note when they host Brentford at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 30th August at 3pm. Both teams have won one and lost one so far in the Premier League and below you can find our match preview and prediction, along with odds and tips.
Brentford to Win & BTTS (4/1 with Dabble)
Despite losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest on MD1, no team have won more away Premier League points than Brentford in 2025 (23 – W7 D2 L2). It’s already more away points than they managed in 2022 (22), 2023 (19) and 2024 (12) and is their joint most away top-flight wins in one year, also winning seven in 1937.
Sunderland are winless in their last five meetings with Brentford in all competitions (D2 L3), with the first since a 2-0 home loss in the Championship in February 2018. Brentford appear to be rediscovering their attacking touch under Keith Andrews, while the absence of Dan Ballard means that Sunderland have lost one of their key threats in both penalty areas.
Eliezer Mayenda to Score Anytime (3/1 with Dabble)
With home advantage and the fantastic crowd at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland always can get on the scoresheet. After scouring the prices, Spaniard Eliezer Mayenda looks the best value prospect to find the net anytime in the match. The 20-year-old was on the score sheet in the memorable 3-0 win over West Ham on the opening day of the campaign. He only let off one shot against Burnley, but I expect that figure to rise now back on home turf against a Brentford side who there are still plenty of questions about.

How both teams go into Sunderland vs Brentford
Sunderland made a dream return to the Premier League, beating West Ham United 3-0 on the opening weekend. For a few hours the Black Cats were top of the league and that’s a moment many savoured while they could. Gameweek 2, however, did not go to plan with a defeat on the road to Burnley, and Regis Le Bris will now be looking to lead Sunderland to back-to-back home Premier League wins for the first time since December 2016. It was something they only achieved once in their most recent Premier League campaign.
Brentford, on the other hand, are looking to find consitency. Life under Keith Andrews didn’t get off to the best start, with the Bees falling 3-1 away to Nottingham Forest, but they bounced back with an impressive 1-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.
Sunderland team news
Sunderland were dealt an early blow against Burnley when Daniel Ballard went down in the ninth minute. The defender is now set to miss matches until after the September international break with a groin injury.
He joins Aji Alese (shoulder), Dennis Cirkin (wrist), Luke O’Nien (shoulder), Leo Fuhr Hjelde (calf), and Romain Mundle (thigh) on the injury list, while Niall Huggins is also a doubt after leaving midweek training with a groin problem.
Brentford team news
Brentford picked up a win at Bournemouth but weren’t without injury concerns. Midfielder Frank Onyeka was substituted late due to a knock, though he was unlikely to start on Saturday.
He is one of five fitness doubts for Andrews, alongside Vitaly Janelt (ankle), Gustavo Nunes (thigh), Paris Maghoma (thigh), and Yunus Konak (ankle). Maghoma and Konak have not been fully ruled out, and wantaway striker Yoane Wissa, despite training with the team, is also unlikely to feature.
Sunderland vs Brentford head-to-head
These two haven’t met since the 2017-18 Championship season, with Brentford taking four points from the two matches. In fact, Sunderland and Brentford have only faced off three times this century.
