Yoane Wissa to Newcastle transfer analysis: Why the striker could be a shrewd replacement for Alexander Isak

Yoane Wissa continues to be linked with a switch to Newcastle amid the ongoing speculation surrounding the future of Toon striker Alexander Isak, who is still determined to join defending Premier League champions Liverpool before the transfer window slams shut on Monday 1st September.

Brentford will be determined to cling onto star striker Wissa, but the chance to join Newcastle, who offer Champions League football and the challenge for trophies, could prove irresistible to the DR Congo international.

Below, we delve into Wissa’s statistics and look at what he could offer Newcastle.

What does Wissa bring to the table?

Wissa is the latest on a conveyor belt of successful forwards at Brentford, following in the footsteps of Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney, with the latter’s exit in 2024 allowing Wissa to come into his own as a striker.

Wissa has 58 goal involvements in 137 Premier League appearances, including 45 goals and 13 assists. He has improved season after season, reflected in 2024-25 when he delivered 23 goal contributions – including 19 goals – with only five players in the Premier League boasting better numbers, as he built on the 16 goal involvements he had carded in 2023-24 (12 goals).

Goals, Assists & Shots

Wissa delivered the most prolific season of his career in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, scoring 19 goals in 35 games – none of which were penalties. Only five players outscored him, as he finished above the likes of Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer in the scoring charts.

Wissa maintained consistent form in front of goal throughout the season and was especially strong in the run-in, where he netted five times in his final seven games. The 28-year-old netted crucial goals too, including an equaliser against Arsenal, the winner in a 4-3 thriller against Man United, and braces in entertaining wins over Ipswich and Bournemouth. On top of that, he scored in both fixtures against Man City and also breached the Newcastle backline in a memorable 4-2 victory.

Wissa also poses a real aerial threat, with four of his goals coming from headers, ranking him second in the league for headed goals last season.

Additionally, this is player who loves to shoot. He accrued 90 shots throughout the 2024-25 campaign (10th most in the league) with 43 of those efforts on target (6th most).

Profitable Partnerships

When it comes to attacking duos, Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo had a combined 39 goals for Brentford last season, plus a further 13 assists. Only Mo Salah and Luis Diaz had a more productive Premier League partnership with 42 goals between them for champions Liverpool.

Losing his partner in crime to Man United this summer must hurt, but Wissa could now have an exciting opportunity to build new attacking partnerships at Newcastle with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, and new signing Anthony Elanga pulling the creative strings.

With these talented players providing the ammunition, Wissa is likely to have plenty of opportunities in front of goal, especially within the danger zone of the penalty area where all 19 of his goals were scored last term.

Wissa vs Jackson vs Larsen

Newcastle have missed out on Benjamin Sesko and it seems unlikely that they would be able to prize Ollie Watkins away from Aston Villa.

Like Wissa, Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen are two forwards that are reportedly on Newcastle’s radar.

As you can see from our bespoke Comparison Matrix above, Wissa is the clear victor of the trio when it comes to many key metrics from the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Wissa accumulated the most goals (19), shots excluding blocks (69), and shots on target (43). He had the best aerial duel (45.45%) and ground duel (44.67%) success, drew 51 fouls, while both Jackson and Larsen frequently failed to play the full 90 minutes, with Jackson notably subbed off in a whopping 22 of the 30 games he played.

Should Newcastle sign Wissa?

The Athletic reported this week that Isak has made it clear he’s played his final game for Newcastle, making it increasingly unlikely he’ll feature in their season opener away to Aston Villa.

While Newcastle are understandably reluctant to sell their star man, they are actively seeking potential replacements and Wissa certainly stands-out as an appealing option.

With nearly 150 Premier League appearances to his name, Wissa knows English football well, brings plenty of experience with him, and is unlikely to need time to adapt.

Newcastle would be signing a player who has 39 goal involvements to his name in his last two Premier League campaigns and one who will be full of confidence following a superb 2024-25 season, during which he scored 19 goals; the same tally as Isak if penalties weren’t included.

Newcastle fans love a No.9 and if Wissa signs and settles in quickly, then he could become a real hero at St James’ Park.
