Transfer deals you might have missed this month, from Grimaldo to Fiorentina’s nightmare duo

Seven transfer deals you might have missed this month, from Weigl to Grimaldo copy

The season isn’t over just yet, but there are already a handful of clubs making preparations ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

For some, the thought of drawing up plans for the summer months is simply unimaginable at this stage, as clubs battle for safety, promotion, Europe and titles.

Without knowing which European competition (if any) or even which league they will be playing in, some clubs can’t think ahead just yet.

But, there are others looking to get business up and running early, hoping to avoid a stagnant summer and transfer sagas dragging on at a tedious rate.

This month alone there have been a handful of signings confirmed by various clubs across Europe, giving an exciting prelude to what is set to be a busy summer across the continent.

Alejandro Grimaldo

To: Bayer Leverkusen

From: Benfica

Fee: Free transfer

Having come through the academy at Barcelona, Alex Grimaldo established himself as one of the most promising and attack-minded left-backs across the continent in Lisbon. He has spent seven years at the Estadio da Luz, during which time the 27-year-old has won three Primeira Liga titles and made over 300 appearances. Amid interest from Arsenal with uncertainty over Kieran Tierney’s future, the buccaneering No. 3 has now taken his exploits to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen.

Omar Marmoush

To: Eintracht Frankfurt

From: Wolfsburg

Fee: Free transfer

Big changes are set to take place in Hesse this summer, with Oliver Glasner already confirmed to be stepping down at the end of the campaign. Transfer wise, the club are also hard at work changing the complexion of their squad, with Egypt international Omar Marmoush joining on a free transfer from Wolfsburg.

The Cairo-born forward has appeared 31 times in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg this term, scoring five goals and impressing with his work rate and attacking endeavour. The 24-year-old takes up the No. 7 shirt, one previously worn by club favourite Jay-Jay Okocha — no pressure then.

Jordan Beyer

To: Burnley

From: Borussia Monchengladbach

Fee: Undisclosed fee

Jordan Beyer was a revelation in the heart of Vincent Kompany’s backline this season as Burnley ran away with the Championship title, keeping 18 clean sheets as the Clarets boasted the best defensive record. His exploits have resulted in the Germany U21 international making his temporary stint at Turf Moor a permanent one, and he can now look forward to next season and trying to muzzle the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Julian Weigl

To: Borussia Monchengladbach

From: Benfica

Fee: Undisclosed fee

One out, one in for Gladbach, as Julian Weigl completes a permanent move to Borussia-Park. The elegant tempo-setter has been on loan in North Rhine-Westphalia from Benfica this season and has impressed for Daniel Farke’s side with his slick passing range and intelligent positional sense. Once tracked by Pep Guardiola at Man City during his time for Borussia Dortmund, the six-time Germany international will be looking to rekindle his elite midfield exploits in the Bundesliga from next season onwards.

Becir Omeragic

To: Montpellier

From: Zurich

Fee: Free transfer

Switzerland U21 international Becir Omeragic has made his first move abroad by joining Montpellier on a free transfer from Zurich. The Geneva-born defender was highly regarded at the Letzigrund and will now be preparing himself to try and shackle the likes of Kylian Mbappe next term.

Musa Al-Taamari

To: Montpellier

From: OH Leuven

Fee: Free transfer

Announced by Montpellier at the same time as Omeragic, La Paillade have also confirmed the signing of 52-capped Jordan international Mousa Al-Tamari. The 25-year-old comes to Ligue 1 from the Belgian top flight with OH Leuven, and has also had spells in Cyprus with APOEL, and his homeland of Jordan. A left-footed winger who plays on the right, Al-Tamari has previously drawn comparisons with Mohamed Salah for his dribbling ability and overall style. If Montpellier get even a fraction of Liverpool’s prolific inside forward, then they will have a player on their hands.

Ramiz Zerrouki

To: Feyenoord

From: FC Twente

Fee: Undisclosed fee

An elegant hatchet-man may be the best way to describe FC Twente’s tackle machine. Ramiz Zerrouki has been one of the standout players in the Eredivisie for a number of years, providing The Tukkers midfield with grit, tenacity and passing elegance, and now those exploits will be transferred to De Kuip for next season.

This campaign, no player has managed more tackles and interceptions combined than Zerrouki (141), who is an expert at breaking up play and regaining possession. A product of Ajax’s academy, that should tell you everything you need to know about the 24-year-old’s ability on the ball as well.

Under a manager like Arne Slot, the Algeria international should elevate his game to new heights.

Lukas Ullrich

To: Monchengladbach

From: Hertha Berlin

Fee: Free transfer

Germany U19 international Lukas Ullrich has sought to avoid potentially dropping down with bottom club Hertha Berlin and remain in the Bundesliga, signing for middling Monchengladbach. The teenage defender has been a mainstay in Hertha’s youth teams this season and will be hoping to push for first-team football in the Ruhr Valley in 2023/24.

Cedric Zesiger

To: Wolfsburg

From: Young Boys

Fee: £5m

Two-capped Switzerland international Cedric Zesiger will be testing himself in a new league next season after completing a move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. The 24-year-old, 6ft 4in centre-back has been a regular fixture for Young Boys since joining them in 2019 from fellow Swiss club Grasshoppers, featuring in last season’s 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Europa League, and will now be hoping to transfer those defensive heroics to the German top tier.

Zeki Amdouni

To: Basel

From: Lausanne-Sport

Fee: £4m

Basel are through to the Europa Conference League semi-finals, and a huge part of that success is down to Zeki Amdouni. Capped three times by Switzerland — scoring two goals — since last year, the 22-year-old has proven one of the major success stories in Europe’s third tier competition. A former Turkey U21 international, the Geneva-born forward combines pace and power to devastating effect, as Nice found out to their detriment in their quarter-final clash, and most recently Fiorentina.

Andy Diouf

To: Basel

From: Rennes

Fee: £5m

Another loan move that has proven highly succesful for Basel is Andy Diouf from Rennes. Like Amdouni, the 19-year-old joined the Swiss club on loan with an obligation to buy, and the club have duly triggered that clause on both players. The teenager has been a midfield catalyst for the European semi-finalists and recently scored a wonder goal in the club’s 2-1 first-leg win over Fiorentina.

Ze Carlos

To: Vitoria Guimaraes

From: Varzim

Fee: Undisclosed fee

Another loan move made permanent, Portugal U21 international Ze Carlos was having an excellent season for Vitoria Guimaraes before injury derailed his progress. He has since returned from the treatment table and Os Vimaranenses have made his temporary stint a permanent one.

Joao Pedro

To: Brighton

From: Watford

Fee: Undisclosed fee

It remains to be seen whether Brighton will achieve European football for next season, but Roberto De Zerbi appears desperate to get transfer business done early nonetheless and keep his squad competitive for 2023/24. The club could suffer a mass exodus if European football isn’t achieved as the perennial big boys circle around their main assets, not least Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, but De Zerbi is making early contingencies.

Their first major piece of activity comes in the guise of Joao Pedro from Watford. The 21-year-old was sensational in 2019/20 as the club achieved Premier League promotion and looked devastating in spells last season in the Premier League. Another campaign in the Championship — which has yielded 11 goals — has seen him gain further experience, and Brighton now feel he is ready to kick on and take the Premier League by storm next term.
