Paul Scholes has criticised Manchester United’s decision to splurge £73m on an “unproven” Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
Sancho endured a difficult maiden campaign at Old Trafford as the entire club struggled to hit the right notes, culminating in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s autumnal dismissal and Ralf Rangnick’s ill-fated interim reign.

The young English forward scored just three times in the Premier League as the club finished with their lowest-ever points total in the competition’s history. Things have started to pick up this term under Erik ten Hag, but that has not prevented Scholes from taking aim at his former club.
The midfield legend also took issue with the club’s decision to sign Raphael Varane last summer, believing that there must have been a reason why Real Madrid were willing to sanction the transfer.
Speaking on The Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet, Scholes said: “Jadon Sancho was a young player who Manchester United spent a lot of money on, who was unproven in the league. And why would a club like Real Madrid let Varane go?
“If you looked at him last season, he didn’t look right. I didn’t think it was a great transfer window. Nobody at the club is taking responsibility for it.”
