Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has joined an exclusive club alongside Danny Welbeck and Alan Smith as one of only three Englishman to score against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
The 23-year-old notched a much-needed early goal for Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final second leg, having fallen to Carlo Ancelotti’s side 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last week, cutting the deficit and handing the reigning European champions a slither of hope.
Mount’s finish was well-executed after the ball fell into his path from Timo Werner, curling a pinpoint strike past Thibaut Courtois in a very familiar sequence, having breached the towering Belgian in last season’s Champions League semi-finals.

Then, Mount’s 85th-minute finish in west London put the gloss on a 3-1 aggregate win over Real and confirmed Chelsea’s place in the final, where they eventually went on to beat Manchester City 1-0. Here, the goal didn’t quite carry as much weight, but it’s a personal milestone Mount will cherish.
He now joins a very exclusive club of his fellow countrymen to net against Los Blancos on their hallowed turf. Alan Smith, formerly of Leeds United, achieved the feat over two decades ago in the competition’s second group stage, while Danny Welbeck managed to find the net for Manchester United in 2013.
David O’Leary’s men put up a commendable fight in the 2000/01 Champions League against Real, losing 3-2 after a Raul brace and a Luis Figo strike cancelled out Smith’s deadlock-breaker after six minutes — and an equaliser from Mark Viduka in the 54th minute.

As for Welbeck, he netted in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final Champions League away game as Man Utd secured a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu. The now-Brighton forward got on the scoresheet with 20 minutes on the clock, before Cristiano Ronaldo famously netted an equaliser and then bagged the winner in the second leg at Old Trafford.
Mount’s finish will be remembered in the Champions League annals as the goal that started a competition classic. Thomas Tuchel’s men would eventually falter after going 3-0 up, with goals from Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner flipping the script, but Rodrygo and Karim Benzema battled back to give the record holders a 5-4 aggregate win.
