Manchester United provide update on new manager search as Roy Keane names his ideal choice

Manchester United have provided an update on their search for a new manager to take over from Ralf Rangnick.

The German took over on an interim basis in the middle of the season and will step aside in the summer, moving into an advisory role, as United appoint a long-term manager to take over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“We know that consistency is key as we strive for a top-four finish this season,” said new United football director John Murtough at the Shareholder’s meeting this week.

Murtough was keen to point out that United weren’t settling into a rhythm of top-four qualification as the end goal, however.

“I want to reiterate however that this is not the ultimate objective for Manchester United,” he said; “everyone at the club is focused on challenging for the top trophies.”

“We are now conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a new permanent manager who will take charge this summer,” said Arnold, reiterating the club’s lofty goals: “the objective [is] to get us back to challenging for those domestic and European titles.”

As the United heirarchy contemplate what to do, club legend Roy Keane has given his verdict on who the Red Devils should be pursuing to be their next permanent manager.

“[Diego] Simeone, go and get him, he’s a big character. He’s done great things. He’s a great character, a big personality. He doesn’t mess around with players,” said the Irishman.

Keane reflected that things aren’t as dire as they seem at Old Trafford, “it can soon change. I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom, there’s still good things going on at United, but they’ve got to get the manager. If the manager is not right, then the rest will just fall apart.”

“Maybe someone like [Simeone] coming into the club, could work,” added Keane, before reflecting on Simeone’s struggles this season with Atlético Madrid: “He’s having a difficult spell with Atletico. His race has maybe run with them.”

Simeone has a contract at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2024, but Keane isn’t deterred by that. “Never mind making excuses saying he’s not available for two years. You pay fortunes for players, so why not a manager? I don’t care who’s under contract; if you think he’s the right manager for Manchester United well you go and get him.”
