    Dean Saunders believes Cristiano Ronaldo is currently lining up alongside two of the worst midfielders he’s ever played with in his career.

    The Portuguese superstar has shared a dressing room with some of the best midfielders in the business, including Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Blaise Matuidi among many others.

    He returned to Old Trafford in the summer after leaving Juventus, but the Red Devils have struggled this season, proving far too inconsistent to mount a serious Premier League title challenge, and now wobbling under interim coach Ralf Rangnick.

    Few appear immune from the firing line as they continue to drop points against clubs they should be beating if they genuinely harbour aspirations of placing in the top four, recently drawing 1-1 with Burnley, which came just a few days after getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough.

    The central midfield partnership of Fred and Scott McTominay has been a particular bone of contention among fans this season, and Saunders has now echoed the general malaise, believing that Ronaldo would probably rank them near the bottom of midfielders he’s played with.

    Saunders told talkSport: “At one point they should’ve been 3-0 up [against Burnley], they were running away with it. Then the minute they get a bit of adversity they seem to go backwards and crumble.

    “If you asked Ronaldo, ‘Who’s the worst midfield players you’ve ever played with in your career?’ Fred and [Scott] McTominay won’t be far off.

    “People are starting to point the finger at Ronaldo, but he’s playing with a few dummies, some of them are not on the same wavelength as him.

    “Every time the ball was shifted around the box and they were piling the pressure on Burnley the ball was going to a really good player, to Pogba, to Rashford, to Lingard, Ronaldo, they’ve got ammunition.

    “They’ve got a bang-average back four and no engine room in the middle of the pitch, the players they’ve got in there are not up to the standard.”
