Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 85 points in two games against Cleveland this week. He had 43 on Monday and 42 on Wednesday, and Oklahoma City won both. Of the 16 Canadians in the NBA, nobody had a bigger week, though Nickeil Alexander-Walker came close with 19 threes. The full list of Canadian NBA players has every season line, and this covers the seven days to Wednesday.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s two games against the Cavaliers
In Cleveland on Monday he took 35 shots and made 14. He finished with 43 points and eight assists in a 117-112 win. Two nights later the teams met again in Oklahoma City. The 42 came on 11-of-26 shooting, with five threes, and the Thunder won 124-116. Both games came after a 26-point night in Saturday’s 119-98 loss in Houston. He is averaging 30.1 points through eight games, and the Thunder are 6-2. On Friday he faces two more Canadians in Memphis, Zach Edey and Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and our Thunder vs Grizzlies preview has the team news.
Alexander-Walker’s 19 threes
Alexander-Walker made 19 of his 48 three-point attempts as Atlanta went 3-1. His best night was Monday in Indianapolis: 34 points, nine threes and four steals in a 108-104 win. Two days later he added 26 and six more threes in a 120-105 win in Washington. Saturday was the exception. He went 0 for 7 from deep in a 121-99 loss in New Orleans. Luguentz Dort, a Montreal native, joined the starting lineup for the last two games. His 14 in Indianapolis included four threes.
Murray’s 39 in Phoenix
Jamal Murray, born in Kitchener, opened the week with 39 points in a 127-120 win in Phoenix on Friday. He made seven of nine threes. Mississauga-born Dillon Brooks started for the Suns and scored 22. Murray added 35 in Monday’s 118-110 home loss to Portland. On Wednesday he had 14 points and seven assists in a 128-109 win over Toronto. Denver won two of three.
Barrett and the Raptors
RJ Barrett scored 22 in that loss in Denver. He averaged 19.8 points across four games. His best was 26 in Monday’s 125-118 win over the Clippers, a night after he had 22 points and 10 rebounds in a 131-125 loss to the Lakers. Toronto went 1-3, and the Raptors are 4-4. Three of the four were on the road. Friday’s NBA Cup game in Milwaukee is next. Our Raptors vs Bucks preview covers Kawhi Leonard’s knee and the rest of the team news.
The Nembhard brothers meet on Saturday
Andrew Nembhard of Indiana and his younger brother Ryan, now with Denver, were both born in Aurora, Ontario. Their clubs meet in Mexico City on Saturday. Andrew has the bigger role. He averages 19.0 points and 6.9 assists, and he scored 22 or more in each of his three games this week. A cervical strain kept him out of Monday’s game against Atlanta. Ryan has played three games and 10 minutes in all. Whether the brothers share the floor is up to Denver’s rotation.
Edey, Mathurin and the rest
Toronto-born Zach Edey had 11 points and 13 rebounds in 25 minutes against Indiana on Wednesday. Memphis lost that one 107-104. Edey and Prosper visit Toronto on Monday. Bennedict Mathurin’s New Orleans won all four of its games, including a 135-134 win in Memphis, and the Montreal-born guard scored 23 points in 66 minutes off the bench across them. Trey Lyles, raised in Saskatoon, came off the bench in all four of Minnesota’s games. Minnesota won three. Andrew Wiggins scored 12 in Miami’s 145-125 win over Indiana, then seven and three. Leonard Miller has played between nine and 19 minutes a night for Chicago, which is 1-7. Will Riley played 13 minutes in Washington on Wednesday, his most this season.
Who is out
Shaedon Sharpe, born in London, Ontario, has not played this season. He tore a meniscus in his knee in August. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported at the time that he was expected to miss about six months.
Canadians on both sides next week
Eight games between now and Thursday put a Canadian on each side, and only one of them, the Grizzlies at the Raptors on Monday, has a Canadian broadcaster listed, so the other seven are on NBA League Pass in Canada.
