Two 6-2 teams open their NBA Cup groups in Memphis. The Grizzlies have the better numbers so far, and the Thunder are without Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.

Every pick is graded on its own page the morning after the game, wins and losses alike.

How the Thunder and Grizzlies compare this season
League rank out of 30 on this season’s box scores (8 and 8 games). Ratings are points per 100 possessions, estimated from the box score.
Memphis has the third-best net rating in the league, +10.3, and makes 40.0 per cent of its threes, the best mark of any team, while Oklahoma City’s defence is still eighth even though its offence, without so many of its regulars, has slipped to 19th.
Jerome against a short-handed Thunder backcourt is where this turns. Wallace is one of their best perimeter defenders, and without him the job of slowing Memphis’ top scorer falls to someone else.

Score prediction
Grizzlies 114-110 Thunder. The Thunder’s absences and Memphis’ shooting point to a Grizzlies win, but Gilgeous-Alexander keeps games close. We expect a margin of about four.
Thunder vs Grizzlies prediction
Oklahoma City is 2-2 away from home and has lost those games by 7.0 on average. All six of its absentees would normally be in the rotation.
The case for Memphis is the gap in net rating, +10.3 against +1.2. The Canadian books disagree and make Oklahoma City about a 59 per cent chance, and home court has not helped the Grizzlies much: they are 2-2 there.
Our pick: the Grizzlies to win. The books make them 3.5-point underdogs at home, so +3.5 is the cautious way to back them.
What would change it: if Jerome were ruled out, we would switch to the Thunder. Stewart was already in doubt when we made the pick.
For how both measure up across the league, see the NBA power rankings. You’ll find Friday’s other NBA Cup games on our NBA games tonight page.
