Champions League 2025-26: how PSG were crowned
Arsenal led inside six minutes. Kai Havertz finished early to put Arteta’s side ahead at the break, the kind of start the run from a knockout playoff entry through to a Budapest final had been built on. PSG levelled in the 65th minute through an Ousmane Dembélé penalty, and extra time produced no further goal. The shootout went the way of fine margins: PSG converted four of their five, Arsenal three of theirs, and Luis Enrique’s side lifted the European Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Champions League 2025-26 Format Explained
The 2025-26 UEFA Champions League used the 36-team league phase introduced for the 2024-25 season. Each side played eight league-phase matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. The top eight teams in the single league table went straight to the round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th entered a two-legged knockout playoff round in February to claim the remaining eight R16 spots. Teams ranked 25th to 36th were eliminated. From the round of 16 onwards, the competition ran as a conventional two-legged knockout through to the one-off final in Budapest.
