What three weeks show

The carry count is the number that matters, and it has gone up rather than held. Forty-nine carries in three games is 16 a week, a pace of about 278 across a 17-game season. He took 232 last year. The load at Pittsburgh was the lightest of the three at 13 carries, so the early pace has come off a little, but Cincinnati are still asking more of him than they did in the season that made his name.

His receiving workload is what separates him from most Canadian skill players who have come through the NFL. The 69 receptions in 2025 were more than any running back on this roster has managed in a decade, and it keeps him on the field on passing downs, which is where a running back’s value is decided in a modern offence. That is the part to watch, because it has not carried over. Ten catches for 32 yards in three games works out at 3.2 yards a reception, against 6.3 last season, and the pattern has held every week: three catches for two yards at Houston, then two for eight at Pittsburgh. Thirteen targets in three games says the plays are still being called for him. The yardage attached to them is the problem.

Yards per carry is the soft spot. He is at 4.0 through three games against 4.4 a year ago, and it has climbed every week rather than settled: 3.5, then 4.0, then 4.7 at Pittsburgh on his lightest workload. On this volume the efficiency matters less than it would for a back splitting carries, but Cincinnati’s offensive line is the variable to watch rather than anything in his own game.

The split matters: more than four in every ten of his scores have come through the air, which is not how most backs are used and is the clearest argument for his floor staying high even in weeks when the ground game stalls.
