Edmonton Oilers vs New York Islanders prediction and picks

Result: Edmonton Oilers 4-0 New York Islanders

Tristan Jarry stopped all 18 shots and Edmonton scored three times in the second period. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins opened at 8:42 of the second, from Kasperi Kapanen. Vasily Podkolzin made it 2-0 sixty-eight seconds later, from Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. Nugent-Hopkins scored again on the power play at 18:26, with Connor McDavid and Draisaitl assisting. Jason Dickinson added the fourth at 17:23 of the third. Edmonton outshot the Islanders 24-18. Jarry started, not Matt Tomkins, and did not concede. Ilya Sorokin stopped 20 of 23 and was lifted for the last half minute. Draisaitl had two assists and McDavid’s assist was his 29th of the season. Edmonton is 10-2-2. The Islanders are 7-5-2.

Right side, right total. We said Edmonton 3-2 and the under, provided the total was 6 or higher. BetMGM, Sports Interaction, Play Alberta and TonyBet had 6, so the condition triggered. Four goals went under every line on the board, including the 5.5 at PointsBet and PROLINE. The side came in for the reason given, the best attack in the league. The margin came from the crease we doubted. We called Jarry’s .889 the weakest number of the four goaltenders here, and he stopped everything. Sorokin, whom we named the best goaltender on the ice, gave up three on 23. The series average of 4.2 was the clearest total signal on the card, and it held. One thing to own: the result was right, and the goaltending argument underneath it was backwards.

The preview as published before the game follows.

Edmonton has the best attack in the league and this is the lowest-scoring series on the weekend’s card. The last five meetings produced 1, 6, 3, 7 and 4 goals, and one of them finished 1-0. Our call, who is fit and what the Canadian books make of it are below.

Edmonton is third, and has lost Hyman as well as Levi

The Oilers are 9-2-2 on twenty points with fifty-six goals, more than any club in the league. They beat Calgary 4-0 on Wednesday.

Zach Hyman went on injured reserve with a neck injury and is out to 3 November. He was listed day to day as recently as Wednesday, so that is a worsening rather than a holding position. Devon Levi is still out to around 9 November and Frederik Andersen to late December.

That leaves Tristan Jarry, 3-1-2 with a .889, and Matt Tomkins, who has not started this season. Seven players are out in total.

Edmonton finished two points clear of the Islanders last season and scored two-thirds of a goal a game more. The power-play gap was enormous, 30.6 per cent against 16.5, but the Islanders conceded a third of a goal a game less and killed penalties three points better.

The Islanders have Sorokin and not much else right now

The Islanders are 7-4-2 on sixteen points and fourteenth. They beat Minnesota 4-3 past regulation on Thursday and have won two in a row.

Ilya Sorokin is the reason. A .919 across eight starts, and the difference between a club scoring 3.1 a game and one sitting outside the playoff places. Semyon Varlamov is 1-1-2 behind him.

Mathew Barzal is out until around 7 November with a knee injury and Alexander Romanov is gone for the season. Ryan Pulock carries a return date of today.

The last five averaged 4.2 goals, and one finished 1-0

Edmonton leads the all-time series 54 wins to 51 across 105 meetings. The Islanders have taken three of the last five, including a 1-0 at Rogers Place.

Those five produced 1, 6, 3, 7 and 4 goals, an average of 4.2. That is the lowest head-to-head average of any game this weekend. Two of them needed extra time and two finished with three goals or fewer, which is a strange record for a series involving the league’s leading scorers.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Edmonton has split between Jarry (6 starts, .889) and Tomkins (0, no starts), and the Islanders have split between Sorokin (8 starts, .919) and Varlamov (4, .891). A save percentage is a season aggregate rather than a lineup, so treat either name as a possibility and not a plan.

Players to watch

Connor McDavid, Edmonton. Leading the NHL in scoring, and the reason a club with this goaltending is third.

Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders. A .919 across eight starts and the best save percentage in this game by thirty points.

Tristan Jarry, Edmonton. A .889 with Levi out, which is the weakest number of the four goaltenders here.

Score prediction

Edmonton Oilers 3-2 New York Islanders. Edmonton is third, but this series has produced 4.2 goals a game and Sorokin is the best goaltender on the ice.

Oilers vs Islanders prediction

Edmonton is the side we would take. Third in the league, the best attack in it, and McDavid scoring at a rate nobody matches.

The case for the Islanders is the crease and the record. Sorokin at .919 is thirty points clear of Jarry, they have won two in a row, and they have taken three of the last five meetings including a shut-out in Edmonton. Our lean: Edmonton, and the under if the total sits at 6 or higher. An average of 4.2 across five meetings is the clearest total signal on the weekend’s card, and Edmonton is without Hyman.

Our NHL power rankings has all 32 in order, and the rest of Saturday’s games is on the NHL schedule.
