Edmonton Oilers vs New Jersey Devils prediction and picks

Result: New Jersey Devils 4-3 Edmonton Oilers (SO)

Arseny Gritsyuk scored the only goal of the shootout. Evan Bouchard opened for Edmonton in the first. Connor Brown and two Jack Hughes goals 45 seconds apart put New Jersey 3-1 up in the second. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl pulled Edmonton level, each on the power play. Connor Hellebuyck made 18 saves and is 3-0-0 as a Devil. Tristan Jarry stopped 31 of 34. Zach Hyman did not dress.

Wrong side, though the over came in. Edmonton at +119 earned a point and not the win. New Jersey outshot the Oilers 34-21, which is the more honest read of the night than our case for the better record. On the total, TonyBet hung 6 and we took the over there. The shootout counts as one goal for totals, so seven went over. Bet99 and Mise-o-jeu had 6.5, where we’d said we’d pass. Edmonton is 11-2-3.

The preview as published before the game follows.

Edmonton is second in the league and the books still make it the underdog. TonyBet has New Jersey at -152. New Jersey has won the last four meetings, has had three days off, and now has Connor Hellebuyck. Edmonton, meanwhile, is on its third game in four nights. Our pick and the team news follow.

Oilers vs Devils odds

Only TonyBet had posted a Canadian price when this page was built: New Jersey −152, Edmonton +119. Other books generally price hockey on the day itself, and the NHL odds page picks them up as they land.

Edmonton has won three straight and conceded one goal doing it

The Oilers are 11-2-2 on 24 points, two behind Carolina. Their 64 goals are level with Colorado’s for the most in the league.

Tristan Jarry shut out Calgary and the Islanders on back-to-back starts. Forty-two shots, no goals. Matt Tomkins then took Sunday’s game at Madison Square Garden and stopped 27 of 28 in a 4-1 win. Devon Levi is expected back around mid-November.

Connor McDavid has 39 points in fifteen games, 30 of them assists. Leon Draisaitl has twelve goals, six on a power play that’s third in the league at 32.7 per cent.

Zach Hyman is on injured reserve with a neck injury and his listed date is today, so the morning skate decides it. Isaac Howard is day to day with a knee.

Goals against per game3.283.10

Penalty kill77.8%79.3%

Edmonton finished six points ahead last season and scored 0.64 of a goal a game more. The power plays were far apart, 30.6 per cent against 22.0. New Jersey had the better kill and conceded a little less.

New Jersey is tenth, outshoots opponents by nearly eight a game, and has a new goaltender

Tenth on eighteen points, New Jersey hasn’t played since winning 5-2 in Vegas on Friday. The Devils are taking 32.6 shots a game and allowing 24.8.

Hellebuyck is 2-0-0 with 36 saves on 39 shots since the trade. Jake Allen has the bigger workload, 5-3-0 at .887, and gave up five in Colorado last week.

The weakness is the kill. It’s at 70.0 per cent, 26th, which is a bad number to carry into a game against Draisaitl. Arseny Gritsyuk leads the club with eight goals and Jack Hughes has sixteen points.

Anthony Mantha left Friday’s game in the third period and Evan Rodrigues missed Monday’s practice with an illness. Both are day to day.

The all-time series is almost dead level: New Jersey 40 wins, Edmonton 39, across 79 meetings. The recent run isn’t. Four straight have gone to New Jersey, two of them in Edmonton.

Those five produced 3, 8, 5, 3 and 9 goals, an average of 5.6. Edmonton scored a combined six goals in the four losses. That’s the strangest number on Tuesday’s card, given who leads the league in scoring.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Edmonton has split between Jarry (7 starts, .901) and Tomkins (1, .964), and New Jersey has split between Hellebuyck (2 starts, .923) and Allen (8, .887). A starter is a decision made on the day, and a save percentage cannot tell you which way it goes.

The NHL injury report carries the rest of the league’s list.

Players to watch

Connor Hellebuyck, New Jersey. Two starts for the Devils, two wins. This is the first time he’s faced McDavid in a New Jersey sweater.

Connor McDavid, Edmonton. Thirty assists in fifteen games and a plus-20. He’s the league’s scoring leader.

Arseny Gritsyuk, New Jersey. Eight goals and a plus-eight, two more goals than Jack Hughes.

Score prediction

Edmonton Oilers 4-3 New Jersey Devils. The better team at plus money, with a power play that should punish a kill sitting 26th.

Oilers vs Devils prediction

Edmonton is our side. The second-best record in the league, the joint-best attack and a goaltender with two shutouts in his last two starts, and it’s priced at +119.

The case for New Jersey is real. Four straight wins in the series, a rested group against a tired one, and Hellebuyck. We’ve stopped leaning on the schedule, though. It’s lost us too many picks this season.

Our lean: Edmonton at +119, and the over at 6. Edmonton’s games are averaging 7.2 goals and the special-teams gap points the same way. At 6.5 we’d pass on the total.
