Where the line has moved

The board opened on 7 September. What has happened since is the most interesting thing on this game, because the two books moved in opposite directions.

Betano opened Edmonton at -270 and cut it. PlayNow opened at -323 and let it out. They started six cents of decimal apart and converged on the same number from either side.

That pattern usually means the early prices were a difference of opinion rather than a difference in information. Neither book is reacting to news. They are arriving at the same conclusion by different routes, and the market has now settled.

Edmonton: the best player in the world, and a goaltending question

Connor McDavid put up 138 points last season on 48 goals and 90 assists. Evan Bouchard added 95 from the blue line. Leon Draisaitl managed 97 in only 65 games. Three players at a point a game or better, and one of them a defenceman.

Mattias Ekholm quietly finished at plus 32, the best mark on the team. Zach Hyman scored 31 in 58 games. The scoring is not the question.

The net is. Edmonton dressed four goaltenders last season and none started more than 32 games. Connor Ingram was the best of them at a 2.60 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage. Stuart Skinner went 11-8-4. Tristan Jarry finished at .858 across 19 appearances. A team with this much scoring finishing 14th tells you where the points went.

Vancouver: a season that went wrong in every direction

The Canucks missed the playoffs and the underlying numbers are worse than the table.

Brock Boeser finished at minus 48. Jake DeBrusk was minus 31 and Elias Pettersson, the centre, minus 30. Filip Hronek led the team in scoring from defence with 49 points and was still minus 23. Only three regulars finished on the right side of even.

Quinn Hughes, the one player who changes games on his own, appeared in 26 games. That is the season in a single number.

In goal, Kevin Lankinen went 11-27-5 with a .875 save percentage across 47 appearances. Thatcher Demko was better in his 20 games at .897, but he managed only 20.

Team news

Demko is the one that matters. He was not ready for training camp and will not be ready for Tuesday, which hands the crease to Lankinen. Edmonton took the series 3-1, and the two most recent meetings were not close.

The last two finished 12-1 on aggregate, including a shutout in Vancouver. The Canucks won once, in overtime, at home, in October.
