Montréal Canadiens vs St Louis Blues prediction and picks

Result: Montréal Canadiens 2-0 St Louis Blues

Jacob Fowler stopped all 46 shots for a second shutout in a week. St Louis outshot Montréal 46-20 and never scored. Zachary Bolduc broke the deadlock at 8:37 of the second with a snap shot, from Mike Matheson and Alexandre Texier. Florian Xhekaj, activated two days earlier, tipped in the second goal 2:17 into the third. Matheson had both assists. Jordan Binnington started for St Louis, not Joel Hofer, and stopped 18 of 20 before he was pulled for an extra attacker. Montréal is 7-3-2 on three straight wins. St Louis is 5-6-1 and has been shut out in its last two home games.

Wrong side, and the total was a no bet. We said St Louis 3-2 and took the over only if the line sat at 6 or lower. It opened at 6.5 across the Ontario books, so there was nothing to take, and two goals would have sunk it anyway. The side failed on an argument this page had already weakened. We wrote that the goaltending edge had gone and that Fowler had conceded two in two games, then backed home ice and four of the last five meetings regardless. Fowler made it three games and two goals, and 46 shots without one going in is what a .924 does to a home-ice case. We also leaned on Hofer’s eight straight starts, and St Louis went to Binnington. One row to own: Alexey Toropchenko was listed as out to mid-November and played 10:25.

The preview as published before the game follows.

St Louis has beaten Montréal four times in five, but the goaltender in form is the visitor’s. Jacob Fowler has stopped 53 of 55 across two straight wins and Nick Suzuki is out until 18 November. The prediction, the team news and the Canadian prices follow.

St Louis has just been shut out at home and still has the series

The Blues are 5-5-1 and twenty-second. They lost 4-0 to Carolina at the Enterprise Center on Saturday, with Joel Hofer facing 39 shots. Blanked at home. Before that they had beaten Vegas 6-2 and Winnipeg 2-1.

Hofer is 4-3-1 with a .917 across eight starts, eight of St Louis’s eleven games. Jordan Binnington has three at a .831. That 6-2 over Vegas is still the best result either club in this game has.

The absentee list is long but peripheral. Torey Krug is on long-term injured reserve, Dillon Dube is out until December and Logan Mailloux until late November. Tyler Tucker and Alexey Toropchenko are both into mid-November. None of them changes the top six.

Montréal finished twenty points clear of St Louis last season. It scored more than half a goal a game more. The Blues had the worse power play by five and a half points. On a 17.6 per cent base that is the weakest number in this game.

Montréal has won two straight without its captain

The Canadiens are 6-3-2 and have taken points in six of seven. They beat Chicago 4-1 on Friday and Winnipeg 2-1 outdoors at the Heritage Classic on Sunday. Two goals on 55 shots.

Nick Suzuki is out until 18 November with an upper-body injury. Ivan Demidov is on injured reserve with a lower-body problem the club put at two to four weeks. Sam Montembeault is also on injured reserve. Florian Xhekaj was activated on Sunday and played.

Jacob Fowler started both weekend wins and is 5-1-0 with a .924 across six. Jakub Dobeš has a .847 across five. Montréal has scored 36 and conceded 36. The record is being carried by the man in net.

St Louis has won four of the last five, and four cleared 6.5

Montréal leads the all-time series 109 wins to 50. That gap was built over decades, not recently. St Louis has won four of the last five.

Those five produced 2, 7, 7, 7 and 9 goals, an average of 6.4. Four of the five cleared 6.5. The exception was a 2-0 shutout, so the range is wide at both ends.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Montréal has split between Fowler (6 starts, .924) and Dobeš (5, .847), and St Louis Blues has split between Hofer (8 starts, .917) and Binnington (3, .831). A save percentage is a season aggregate rather than a lineup, so treat either name as a possibility and not a plan.

Players to watch

Jacob Fowler, Montréal. Two goals against on 55 shots over the weekend. His .924 now edges every goaltender on this page.

Joel Hofer, St Louis. Eight straight starts, a .917, and 35 saves in a game his side lost 4-0.

Cole Caufield, Montréal. The scoring load until Suzuki is back in the middle of November.

Score prediction

St Louis Blues 3-2 Montréal Canadiens. St Louis is at home and has won four of the last five meetings. This one is closer than it was a week ago.

Blues vs Canadiens prediction

St Louis is the side we would take, narrowly. It has won four of the last five in this series, it is at home, and Montréal is a month without its captain. The goaltending edge we would have claimed a week ago has gone. Fowler’s .924 now sits above Hofer’s .917, and the Canadian books price this close to even.

The case for Montréal is two straight wins and a goaltender who has conceded two goals in two games. Our lean: St Louis, and the over if the total sits at 6 or lower. Four of the last five in this series cleared 6.5. The two goaltenders likely to start have allowed six between them in their last four games, so we would leave 6.5 itself alone.

Our NHL power rankings has all 32 in order, and the rest of Tuesday’s games is on the NHL schedule.
