Calgary is 7-3 in ten, and 2-5 on the road

The Flames are 7-8-0 and 25th. That hides a turnaround: after losing their first five they’ve won seven of ten, most recently 2-1 in San Jose on Monday, when Dustin Wolf stopped 26 of 27 shots.

Cooley went on injured reserve on 30 October. He’s 4-3-0 with a .914, the best numbers in Calgary’s crease. Wolf is 3-4-0 at .862, and Arsenii Sergeev lost his only start, 5-2 in Denver.

Goals are scarce. Calgary scores 2.53 a game, 29th. The power play is another matter: it converts 30.6 per cent, fifth in the league, and Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin have three power-play goals apiece. Joel Farabee leads the team with fifteen points.

Jonathan Huberdeau is still on injured reserve after hip surgery, though he has joined morning skates. Connor Zary and Samuel Honzek are out too.

Seattle scores freely and can’t kill a penalty

The Kraken are 8-5-1 and fifteenth, and they’ve had four days off since losing in Calgary. They’re 4-2-0 at Climate Pledge Arena.

Seattle is seventh in goals at 3.57 a game and 29th in goals against at 3.71. The kill is at 64.1 per cent, 30th, and tonight it faces the fifth-best power play in the league.

Philipp Grubauer is 5-2-1 at .886 and was pulled in Calgary after four goals on fourteen shots. Joey Daccord finished that game and is 3-3-0 at .880.

Seattle traded Shane Wright to Nashville for Matthew Wood on Sunday. Wright scored in the 6-1 win on 4 October. Jared McCann is on injured reserve with no date given, and Ryan Lindgren is out with an upper-body injury.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Calgary has split between Wolf (7 starts, .862) and Sergeev (1, .853), and Seattle has split between Grubauer (8 starts, .886) and Daccord (6, .880). Nothing here settles the starter; the clubs do that themselves, usually a few hours before the game.

Every other club’s injury list is kept current on our NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Mackie Samoskevich, Seattle. Six goals this season, and half of them have come against Calgary.

Joel Farabee, Calgary. Fifteen points, the most on the team. He had a goal and two assists in the 6-2 win last Friday.

Matvei Gridin, Calgary. Five goals, three on the power play, and one of those came against this Seattle kill five days ago.

Score prediction

Seattle Kraken 4-3 Calgary Flames. Seattle’s home form and its run in this series, against a Calgary side scoring 2.53 a game and missing its best goaltender.

Kraken vs Flames prediction

Seattle is the side, at -143 with TonyBet against +113 for Calgary.

Five of Calgary’s seven wins came at home, where it’s 5-3-0. On the road it’s 2-5-0, and Cooley started four of the seven.

The Flames do have one matchup edge. Their power play is fifth and Seattle’s kill is 30th, which is how Calgary scored six last Friday.

Our lean: Seattle on the moneyline, and the over at 6. Seattle’s games average 7.3 goals. The special-teams gap points the same way. Mise-o-jeu’s 6.5 is a pass for us.

Both clubs get a weekly verdict in our NHL power rankings. The NHL schedule shows the rest of Wednesday’s games.
